ReviewThe Australian Trauma Registry (ATR): a leading clinical quality registry.
Operating since 2012 under the auspices of the Australian Trauma Quality Improvement Program (AusTQIP), the Australian Trauma Registry (ATR) has established itself as a leading clinical quality registry (CQR). Initially developed as a national program for improved safety and quality trauma care across Australian trauma centers, it has since expanded to include New Zealand, becoming one of the few bi-national trauma registries. ⋯ The ATR, administered by the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI), monitors the continuum of trauma care from pre-hospital settings, to discharge from definitive care. Collection and analysis of data about severely injured trauma patients, their injuries, management and outcomes, aims to inform future improvements to health service provision and reduce preventable morbidity and mortality.

ReviewNarrative Review: Is There a Transfusion Cutoff Value After Which Nonsurvivability Is Inevitable in Trauma Patients Receiving Ultramassive Transfusion?
The institution of massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) has improved the timely delivery of large quantities of blood products and improves patient outcomes. In recent years, the cost of blood products has increased, compounded by significant blood product shortages. There is practical need for identification of a transfusion volume in trauma patients that is associated with increased mortality, or a threshold after which additional transfusion is futile and associated with nonsurvivability. ⋯ The data examining the utility of UMT in trauma are of poor quality, and with the variability inherent in trauma patients, and the surgeons caring for them, no universally accepted cutoff for transfusion exists. Not surprisingly, there is a trend toward increasing mortality with increasing transfusions. The decision to continue transfusing is multifactorial and must be individualized, taking into consideration patient characteristics, institution factors, blood bank supply, and most importantly, constant reevaluation of the need for ongoing transfusion rather than blind continuous transfusion until the heart stops.

Effect of prehospital intubation on mortality rates in patients with traumatic brain injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
It is unclear if prehospital intubation improves survival in patients with traumatic brain injury. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of prehospital intubation on mortality rates of traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Heterogeneous data from mostly observational studies demonstrates higher mortality rates among traumatic brain injury patients receiving prehospital intubation. The efficacy of prehospital intubation is difficult to judge without taking into account multiple confounding factors.

Prehospital spinal immobilization using a cervical collar and a backboard has been standard practice for suspected spinal cord injuries (SCIs) since the 1960s. Multiple studies have shown that the disadvantages of the spinal backboard outweigh its advantages. This report aims to present a review of the current literature along with the revised IDF protocol regarding patients with suspected SCI. ⋯ In light of the evidence showing the potential harmful effects of the routine use of spinal backboards, the IDF guidelines have been revised and now recommends avoiding the routine use of spinal backboards and using a standard stretcher for transporting potential SCI patients. Current IDF guidelines recommend using a backboard for the extraction of an entrapped patient and for obtunded or unconscious patients with obvious deformity or mechanism for spinal trauma.

Feeding and eating disorders can be difficult to treat and frequently co-occur with other mental health conditions. The last systematic review of eating disorders in a military and veteran population was published in 2015. An updated review is warranted to re-examine the current literature on eating disorders in the active duty and veteran populations. ⋯ Research on eating disorders in the military and veteran populations has expanded in recent years. Limitations of the evidence included in this review stem from the use of self-reported questionnaires, changes to medical record systems, and limited generalizability to the overall population of patients with eating disorders. Further research should investigate the impact of demographic factors and trauma exposure on the development of an eating disorder within the military and veteran populations.
