Ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy are frequently used to diagnose thyroid cancer. However, supportive data might be required in case of diagnostic difficulty. This study investigated whether there is a relationship between thiol/ disulphide homeostasis and cytological and histopathological diagnosis of thyroid nodules. ⋯ Oxidative stress parameters were significantly higher in thyroid cancer. A positive correlation was detected between Bethesda categories with increased risk of malignancy and the disulphide/native thiol ratio and the disulphide/total thiol ratio.

Katanin subunits p60 and p80 are involved in microtubule-mediated cytoskeletal organization during cell division. Their aberrant expression has been found in prostate, breast, and non-small cell lung (NSCLC) cancers. It has recently been reported that compared with adjacent papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) tissues, both are highly expressed in tumor tissues. ⋯ The expression of the katanin subunit p60 was positively correlated with the expression of katanin p80 in PTC. Importantly, we found that overexpression of katanin p60 increased the expression of katanin p80 in a human papillary thyroid carcinoma KTC-1 cell line, which further supports the existence of katanin p60 and p80 feedback loops. Our results indicate that katanin subunits p60 and p80 may be used as potential PTC biomarkers to distinguish NG and may be novel therapeutic targets for PTC.

We describe the clinical course of two patients who developed tracheal compression and deviation by multinodular goiter (MNG). Case 1: A 66-year-old woman presented with thyroid swelling. Five years after the initial admission, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism by Graves' disease and increased bilateral thyroid lobes compressing the trachea. ⋯ Thyroglobulin was elevated from 122 to 392 ng/mL. Two cases and literature review indicated that MNG with >50 mm, solid components, and extension to the mediastinum or paralarynx were risk factors of tracheal compression and deviation. Monitoring thyroglobulin elevation can help predict the clinical course.

Thyroid nodules are one of the most common entities that affect the thyroid gland. Traditionally, their treatment was surgery. Currently, ablation combination with percutaneous procedure became a good option. ⋯ The thyroid function tests, pre and postablation showed no significant changes (P > .05). Ultrasound-guided microwave-ablation of thyroid nodules is safe and effective. More clinical trials are needed to define the true use of microwave-ablation.
