To determine the prevalence of prior and current mental health disorders in parents, including trends over time. ⋯ From 1990 to 2005, there was an increase in prevalence of parents with a prior history of mental health disorders in WA. General practitioners and mental health workers can play an important role in identifying mental illness and in working with families to offer early intervention, referral and support.

Pain and psychological health status in chronic pain patients with migration background--the Zurich study.
The objective of this paper is to investigate whether there were differences in pain and psychological health status in chronic pain patients with and without migration background before and after an 8-week interdisciplinary outpatient pain programme (IOPP). One hundred eighteen consecutively assessed patients were included. Pain and psychological health were recorded prior to and after the intervention, and at the 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. ⋯ The results show differences in outcome for chronic pain patients with and without migration background. High pain intensity, high levels of depression, anxiety and catastrophizing at baseline appear to be major barriers for improvement in a sample of migrant patients when participating in an IOPP. Treatments may have to be tailored to the specific needs of this patient group to better address their poor psychological health status and to improve the course of the pain disorder.

We examined whether same-sex marriage was associated with nonspecific psychological distress among self-identified lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults, and whether it had the potential to offset mental health disparities between lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons and heterosexuals. ⋯ Being in a legally recognized same-sex relationship, marriage in particular, appeared to diminish mental health differentials between heterosexuals and lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons. Researchers must continue to examine potential health benefits of same-sex marriage, which is at least in part a public health issue.

The relationship between spirituality, psychosocial adjustment to illness, and health-related quality of life in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.
Spirituality may promote psychosocial adjustment to illness, and this may be a mechanism by which patients with greater existential well-being (EWB) experience better health-related quality of life (HRQL) in the context of life-limiting illness. ⋯ Adjustment in the domains of psychological distress and extended family relationships appears to mediate some of the beneficial effect of EWB on HRQL. Spirituality, however, provides unique variance in patients' HRQL, independent of their psychosocial adjustment. This study testifies to the importance of targeting both psychosocial adjustment to illness and spirituality as ways to preserve or enhance HRQL of predialysis and dialysis patients.

Physical health, mental health, and life changes among family caregivers of patients with lung cancer.
To describe physical health, mental health, and life changes among family caregivers of patients with lung cancer. ⋯ Findings suggest that interventions are needed to address the negative physical and emotional health consequences of caring for family members with lung cancer. Such interventions could build on the relational benefits of caregiving to improve the patient-caregiver relationship and expand caregivers' support system.
