The present study compared the clinical functional outcomes and new vertebral compression fractures (NVCFs) between percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and conservative treatment (CT) in patients with severe pain due to acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). PVP has been increasingly used for the treatment of pain in patients with OVCFs. However, the effectiveness of the procedure and whether it causes NVCFs has remained controversial. ⋯ Compared with CT, PVP provided a rapid decrease in pain and an early return to daily life activities, without an increase in the incidence of NVCFs.

Negative pressure wound therapy vs. conventional management in open tibia fractures: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Severe open tibia fractures are disastrous injuries associated with a high incidence of complications. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a novel treatment for open tibia fractures; however, its efficacy remains unclear. This is a systematic review and meta-analysis performed to evaluate the effect of NPWT on decreasing the infection rate, amputation rate, nonunion rate, and flap-related complications in open tibia fractures. ⋯ Lower rates of soft-tissue infection, nonunion, flap necrosis, and flap revision were observed in the NPWT group than in the conventional dressing group. However, additional high-quality studies are warranted to verify the efficacy of NPWT in the treatment of severe open tibia fractures. We could not make a definitive conclusion about the comparative efficacy of the 2 methods in terms of complications because of insufficient data.

Fractures to the anterior process of the calcaneus (APC) have long been considered rare injuries. Although recent studies have reported a higher incidence, these injuries have yet received little attention in clinical research. Only few case reports/series, all suffering multiple methodical shortcomings, exist. The aim of this study was to objectively evaluate the outcome after fractures to the APC treated by full weight bearing and to investigate the influence of fracture characteristics. ⋯ Functional treatment of fractures to the anterior process of the calcaneus yielded good to excellent results and a fast return to work in the vast majority of patients. Yet, a prolonged return to sports was noted. No significant differences regarding the outcome were observed when comparing the different fracture types or any other fracture characteristic assessed.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyRib fixation versus non-operative treatment for flail chest and multiple rib fractures after blunt thoracic trauma: a multicenter cohort study.
Over the years, a trend has evolved towards operative treatment of flail chest although evidence is limited. Furthermore, little is known about operative treatment for patients with multiple rib fractures without a flail chest. The aim of this study was to compare rib fixation based on a clinical treatment algorithm with nonoperative treatment for both patients with a flail chest or multiple rib fractures. ⋯ No advantage could be demonstrated for operative fixation of rib fractures. Future studies are needed before rib fixation is embedded or abandoned in clinical practice.
