We aimed to determine whether high-flow nasal oxygen could reduce the incidence of decreased peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) compared with standard oxygen in patients at risk of hypoxaemia undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy under deep sedation. ⋯ NCT03829293.

Randomized Controlled TrialHigh-Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen in Patients Having Anesthesia for Advanced Esophagogastroduodenoscopy: HIFLOW-ENDO, a Randomized Clinical Trial.
Over 6 million esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) procedures are performed in the United States each year. Patients having anesthesia for advanced EGD procedures, such as interventional procedures, are at high risk for hypoxemia. ⋯ HFNC oxygen reduces the incidence of hypoxemia during anesthesia for advanced EGD and may offer an opportunity to enhance patient safety during these procedures.

Randomized Controlled TrialHigh-flow Nasal Oxygen Versus Standard Oxygen During Flexible Bronchoscopy in Lung Transplant Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Diagnostic and interventional flexible bronchoscopy (FB) is increasingly utilized in complex and high-risk patients. Patients are often sedated for comfort and procedure facilitation and hypoxia is commonly observed in this setting. We hypothesized that high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) would reduce the incidence of patients experiencing oxygen desaturation. ⋯ Hypoxia occurred less commonly in postlung transplant patients receiving HFNO during FB. Further studies are warranted in other high-risk populations undergoing longer duration FB.

A study on respiratory management in acute postoperative period by nasal high flow for patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia.
In head and neck surgery where the oropharyngeal area is the operative field, postoperative respiratory depression and upper airway obstruction are common. Therefore, supplemental oxygen is administered to prevent severe postoperative early hypoxemia. However, a high concentration of oxygen increases the likelihood of secondary complications, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) narcosis. ⋯ This exploratory study will investigate the use of NHF without supplemental oxygen as an effective respiratory support during the acute postoperative period. Randomized Controlled TrialNoninvasive ventilation support during fiberoptic bronchoscopy-guided nasotracheal intubation effectively prevents severe hypoxemia.
This study investigated the feasibility and efficacy of continuous noninvasive ventilation (NIV) support with 100% oxygen using a specially designed face mask, for reducing desaturation during fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB)-guided intubation in critically ill patients with respiratory failure. ⋯ Continuous NIV support during FOB-guided nasal intubation can prevent severe desaturation during intubation in critically ill patients with respiratory failure.
