Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology Nature Publishing Group (2000). ISSN 1471-0072. Monthly First there was Annual Reviews, then came the monthly Elsevier Trends Journals, both of which try to identify hot topics in their chosen fields. ⋯ The magazine has a nice heft to it, and is attractively designed and presented in glossy colour, although the main font is small enough to make reading difficult for your middle-aged reviewer in a particularly heavily overcast and rainy week in London. A first issue is supposed to be a kind of showcase, but if they can keep this up, the editors will surely have a success on their hands and you will probably be obliged to take out a personal subscription (£85), or persuade your library to part with £565. That's slightly cheaper than TiBS and a lot cheaper than Current Opinion in Cell Biology, both of which will have to run faster if they want to stay in the same place.

The authors report a 50-year-old man with a ruptured large carotid-ophthalmic aneurysm on the right side and an unruptured anterior communicating artery (A Com) aneurysm. The A Comm aneurysm was clipped and the carotid-ophthalmic aneurysm was managed by combining internal carotid artery (ICA) trapping with an interposed radial artery graft from the external carotid artery (ECA) to the middle cerebral artery (MCA). ⋯ Postoperative vertebral angiography showed the right ophthalmic artery to be fed by the posterior communicating artery. It is speculated that collateral circulation from the angular artery of the ECA to the ophthalmic artery did not develop because of high flow graft from the ECA to MCA and ICA trapping.

Thicknesses of subcutaneous fat tissue at 13 sites (triceps, biceps, forearm, subscapular, abdomen, suprailiac, axilla, chest, quadriceps, suprapatellar, hamstrings, posterior calf, medial calf), and muscle tissue at nine sites (triceps, biceps, forearm, subscapular, abdomen, quadriceps, suprapatellar, hamstrings, posterior calf) were determined by using the B-mode ultrasound technique. Subjects were 36 young (18-29 years) and 44 middle-aged women (45-64 years). Body density averaged 1.047 ± 0.007 g · ml-1 (SD) for the young, and 1.022 ± 0.005 g · ml-1 for the middle-aged women. ⋯ J. Hum. Biol. 9:247-255, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Several aspects of congestive heart failure are discussed in the light of international literature and of recent findings of our group. The annual incidence of heart failure in elderly subjects, aged >or=75y, is 13 to 50/1000, while it is 1.6/1000 in people aged 45-54 y. The prevalence of heart failure is about 3% in subjects aged 45-64% in subjects aged more than 65 y and 10% in subjects aged more than 75 y. ⋯ No specific drugs exist for the pharmacologic treatment of heart failure in the elderly, so that the geriatric specificity in the treatment of heart failure can be recognized in the art of drug choice and dosage, to obtain the best results with the least side effects. The multiple etiology of congestive heart failure, the comorbidity, the loss of autonomy and the deterioration of cognitive functions suggest the need for multidimensional approach and continuative intervention in elderly patients with heart disease, and in particular with congestive heart failure. Further studies on disease- and age-related changes are necessary to develop new and more potent strategies to secure 'successful ageing'.
