POCUS for Infectious Enteritis-A Retrospective Case Series Analysis.
The abdominal pain associated with diarrhea can be difficult to distinguish from appendicitis. We present a case series of all children found on pediatric emergency department point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to have right-sided bowel wall edema. ⋯ Enteritis can initially be difficult to distinguish on clinical grounds from acute appendicitis. Bowel wall edema on POCUS in a child without sonographic signs of appendicitis strongly suggests bacterial enteritis. Early POCUS demonstrating enteritis without signs of appendicitis may decrease hospital resource usage.

Academic emergency medicine (EM) is foundational to the EM specialty through the development of new knowledge and clinical training of resident physicians. Despite recent increased attention to the future of the EM workforce, no evaluations have specifically characterized the U.S. academic EM workforce. We sought to estimate the national proportion of emergency physicians (EPs) identified as academic and the proportion of emergency department (ED) visits that take place at academic sites. ⋯ Approximately four in 10 EPs practice in at least one clinical training site affiliated with an ACGME-accredited EM residency program, and approximately one in three ED visits nationally occur in these academic EDs. We encourage further work using alternative definitions of an academic EPs and EDs, along with longitudinal research to identify trends in the workforce's composition.

To assess the emergency department practice context and identify strategies to improve outcomes of patients with acute pain. ⋯ Achieving impactful change in clinical practice to improve patient outcomes should start with the application of implementation methods that enable comprehensive analysis of the local practice context. The assessment should begin with collaboration with local clinicians that persist throughout the life of the study to ensure change is sustainable.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a potentially transformative force, particularly in the realm of emergency medicine (EM). The implementation of AI in emergency departments (ED) has the potential to improve patient care through various modalities. However, the implementation of AI in the ED presents unique challenges that influence its clinical adoption. This scoping review summarizes the current literature exploring the barriers and facilitators of the clinical implementation of AI in the ED. ⋯ There is increasing literature on AI implementation in the ED. Our research suggests that the most common barrier facing AI implementation in the ED is model interpretability and explainability. More primary research investigating the implementation of specific AI tools should be undertaken to help facilitate their successful clinical adoption in the ED.

Dengue is an arbovirus transmitted by the Aedes spp. mosquito. Approximately 390 million infections occur annually per World Health Organization estimates, with significant increases in infections throughout the last decade. ⋯ Patients experience a wide variety of symptoms ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe disease requiring critical care. Emergency clinicians should consider the diagnosis of dengue in patients from endemic areas presenting with a flu-like illness, rash, and evidence of bleeding.
