Randomized Controlled TrialEffectiveness of a multifaceted intervention to improve emergency department care of low back pain: a stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised trial.
Overuse of lumbar imaging is common in the emergency department (ED). Few trials have examined interventions to address this. We evaluated the effectiveness of a multifaceted intervention to implement guideline recommendations for low back pain in the emergency department. ⋯ It is uncertain if a multifaceted intervention to implement guideline recommendations for low back pain care decreased lumbar imaging in the ED; however, it did reduce opioid prescriptions without adversely affecting patient outcomes. Battlefield Acupuncture Versus Standard Pharmacologic Treatment of Low Back Pain in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Battlefield acupuncture (BFA) offers a novel analgesic option that avoids the need for pharmacologic interventions with problematic side effect profiles. ⋯ BFA shows promise for further study as an alternative to standard pharmacologic interventions among adults presenting to the ED with low back pain. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

Topical ketamine as a local anesthetic agent in reducing venipuncture pain: A randomized controlled trial.
Pain control is an important aspect of ED patient management, and there are many different protocols used around the world influenced by both availability of local resources as well as staff competency and experience. This study aims to evaluate the use of topical ketamine in acute pain reduction by directly comparing it to lidocaine-prilocaine (EMLA) cream. ⋯ This study showed that local cutaneous ketamine is as effective as EMLA in relieving pain during venipuncture.

Predictive Model-Driven Hotspotting to Decrease Emergency Department Visits: a Randomized Controlled Trial.
Emergency department (ED) visits contribute substantially to health care expenditures. Case management has been proposed as a strategy to address the medical and social needs of complex patients. However, strong research designs to evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions are limited. ⋯ The community case management intervention targeting ED visits was not associated with reduced utilization. Future case management interventions may benefit from additional patient engagement strategies and longer evaluation time periods.

Cardiac Arrest Nurse Leadership (CANLEAD) trial: a simulation-based randomised controlled trial implementation of a new cardiac arrest role to facilitate cognitive offload for medical team leaders.
Medical team leaders in cardiac arrest teams are routinely subjected to disproportionately high levels of cognitive burden. This simulation-based study explored whether the introduction of a dedicated 'nursing team leader' is an effective way of cognitively offloading medical team leaders of cardiac arrest teams. It was hypothesised that reduced cognitive load may allow medical team leaders to focus on high-level tasks resulting in improved team performance. ⋯ Dedicated nursing team leadership in simulation based cardiac arrest teams resulted in cognitive offload for medical leaders and improved team performance.
