Review Meta AnalysisMagnetic resonance spectroscopy of traumatic brain injury and subconcussive hits: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a non-invasive technique used to study metabolites in the brain. MRS findings in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subconcussive hit literature have been mixed. The most common observation is a decrease in N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), traditionally considered a marker of neuronal integrity. ⋯ NAA was consistently decreased in TBI of all severities, but not in subconcussive hits. Cho and mI were found to be increased in moderate-to-severe TBI but not in mild TBI. Glx and Cr were largely unaffected, but did show alterations in certain conditions.

The Impact of Short-Term Hyperoxia on Cerebral Metabolism: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Cerebral ischemia due to hypoxia is a major cause of secondary brain injury and is associated with higher morbidity and mortality in patients with acute brain injury. Hyperoxia could improve energetic dysfunction in the brain in this setting. Our objectives were to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature and to assess the impact of normobaric hyperoxia on brain metabolism by using cerebral microdialysis. ⋯ Normobaric hyperoxia may improve cerebral metabolic disturbances in patients with acute brain injury. The clinical impact of such effects needs to be further elucidated.

Review Meta AnalysisSalted or sweet? Hypertonic saline or mannitol for treatment of intracranial hypertension.
The aim of this review article is to present current recommendations regarding the use of hypertonic saline and mannitol for the treatment of intracranial hypertension. ⋯ Identifying and treating increased intracranial pressure is imperative in neurocritical care settings and proper management is essential to improve long-term outcomes. Currently, there is insufficient evidence from comparative studies to support a formal recommendation on the use of any specific hyperosmolar medication in patients with acute increased intracranial pressure.

Intracranial Pressure Monitoring in Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The principal aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and intracranial hypertension (IHT) in patients treated for moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI). A secondary objective was to assess factors associated with ICP monitoring. ⋯ The prevalence of ICP monitoring in moderate TBI is low, but the prevalence of IHT is high among patients undergoing ICP monitoring. Current literature is limited in size and quality and does not identify factors associated with ICP monitoring or IHT. Further research is needed to guide the optimal use of ICP monitoring in moderate TBI.

Neuroprotection by the noble gases argon and xenon as treatments for acquired brain injury: a preclinical systematic review and meta-analysis.
The noble gases argon and xenon are potential novel neuroprotective treatments for acquired brain injuries. Xenon has already undergone early-stage clinical trials in the treatment of ischaemic brain injuries, with mixed results. Argon has yet to progress to clinical trials as a treatment for brain injury. Here, we aim to synthesise the results of preclinical studies evaluating argon and xenon as neuroprotective therapies for brain injuries. ⋯ These findings provide evidence to support the use of xenon and argon as neuroprotective treatments for acquired brain injuries. Current evidence suggests that xenon is more efficacious than argon overall.
