Biopsychosocial Factors Associated With Attention Problems in Children After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

The use of anticoagulant medications leads to a higher risk of developing traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (tICH) after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The management of anticoagulated patients can be difficult to determine when the initial head computed tomography is negative for tICH. There has been limited research on the risk of delayed tICH in patients taking direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) medications. ⋯ This systematic review confirms that delayed tICH after mTBI in patients on DOACs is uncommon. However, large, multicenter, prospective studies are needed to confirm the true incidence of clinically significant delayed tICH after DOAC use. Due to the limited data, we recommend using shared decision-making for patients who are candidates for discharge.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently impacts an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. Secondary injuries after traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments on cerebral oxygenation and autoregulation. ⋯ The majority of the evidence found used NIRS for diagnosis applications, especially in oxygenation and autoregulation monitoring (59%). It was not surprising that nearly all the patients were male adults with severe trauma who were monitored mostly with continue wave NIRS or spatially resolved spectroscopy NIRS and an invasive monitoring device. In general, a high proportion of the assessed papers have concluded that NIRS could be a potential noninvasive technique for assessing TBI, despite the various methodological and technological limitations of NIRS.

Role of Music Therapy in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Music therapy has promising results in improving rehabilitation outcomes of patients with various neurologic disorders; however, its effectiveness in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is not clear. ⋯ Pooled results from 6 studies demonstrated statistically significant improvement in the stride length and executive function outcome in patients with TBI after music therapy rehabilitation. The improvement effect on cadence and gait velocity was not statistically significant and no significant effect of music therapy was found on memory in these patients.

Epidural hematomas (EDHs) and subdural hematomas (SDHs), or so-called extra-axial bleedings, are common clinical entities after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A forensic pathologist often analyzes cases of traumatic EDHs or SDHs due to road accidents, suicides, homicides, assaults, domestic or on-the-job accidents, and even in a medical responsibility scenario. ⋯ We mainly focused on the data from the last 15 years, and considered the most updated protocols and diagnostic-therapeutic tools. This study reviews the epidemiology, outcome, and dating of extra-axial hematomas in the adult population; studies on the controversial interdural hematoma are also included.
