In the last century, progress in the knowledge of human diseases, their diagnosis and treatment have grown exponentially, due in large part to the introduction and use of laboratory animals. Along with this important progress, the need to provide training and guidance to the scientific community in all aspects related to the proper use of experimental animals has been indispensable. Animal research committees play a primary role in evaluating experimental research protocols, from their feasibility to the rational use of animals, but above all in seeking animal welfare. ⋯ Here, we present and discuss the topics that we consider of utmost importance to take in the account during the design of any experimental research protocol, so we invite researchers, technicians, and undergraduate and graduate students to dive into the fascinating subject of proper animal care and use for experimentation. The main intention of these contributions is to sensitize users of laboratory animals for the proper and rational use of them in experimental research, as well as to disseminate the permitted and unpermitted procedures in laboratory animals. In the first part, the significance of experimental research, the main functions of IACUC, and the principle of the three R's (replacement, reduction, and refinement) are addressed.

As the media informed the spread of a highly transmissible disease, our medical community faced the disappearance of a languishing ancient tool. Traditionally helping to explain unexplainable death, educate, audit, warn relatives, or contacts; autopsies vanished in a reassigned COVID-19 teaching hospital (Fig. 1).

Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD) is the most common form of a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by altered α-dystroglycan glycosylation and caused by FKTN gene mutations. However, mutations of this gene may cause a broad range of phenotypes, including Walker-Warburg syndrome, muscle-brain-eye disease, FCMD, limbgirdle muscular dystrophy without mental retardation, and cardiomyopathy with no or minimal skeletal muscle weakness. ⋯ This is the first report demonstrating that heterozygous individuals for the FKTN p.Gly424Ser mutation were healthy, while two homozygous brothers suffered severe DCM, strongly suggesting that this FKTN mutation is a rare cause of autosomal recessive DCM.

The pandemic character of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) requires strategy changes designed to guarantee the safety of patients and health-care professionals. We are greatly concerned by the limitations in the operation of pulmonary function test (PFT) laboratories, since there is a high risk of disease progression in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases, and we are now faced by the influx of a new group of individuals in the recovery phase of post-COVID-19-syndrome that requires evaluation and follow-up of their respiratory function. ⋯ We present the safety and hygiene measures that must be adopted in laboratories or centers where PFT is conducted in adults and/or children. These recommendations answer the following questions: which PFT is most recommended in subjects that have recovered from COVID-19; what quality control and safety measures should PFT laboratories implement during this pandemic? And how should we approach non-COVID-19 patients requiring PFT?

Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines state that patients with moderate to severe asthma may be at greater risk for more severe disease if infected with SARS-CoV-2; however, no published data support this suggestion. During this pandemic, it is recommended that patients with asthma continue taking all controller inhalers and other asthma medication as prescribed to prevent exacerbations and limit outpatient clinic and emergency room exposure. Symptoms that may differentiate COVID-19 from asthma exacerbations caused by another trigger may include fever, fatigue, anorexia, or myalgias. Patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should avoid nebulizer treatments due to the risk of aerosolization.
