Three patients who showed an allergic reaction to latex products are described. By means of history, skin tests, measurement of IgE antibodies against latex and challenge tests the diagnosis could be established. ⋯ Latex allergy should be considered when evaluating 'idiopathic' anaphylaxis during an operation. Moreover, latex allergy may be the cause of occupational rhinitis and asthma.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialComparative profiles of reliability, cycle control and side effects of two oral contraceptive formulations containing 150 micrograms desogestrel and either 30 micrograms or 20 micrograms ethinyl oestradiol.
To compare two oral contraceptive pills, both containing 150 micrograms desogestrel, but with either 20 micrograms (Mercilon) or 30 micrograms (Marvelon/Desolett) ethinyl oestradiol (EE), regarding reliability, cycle control and side effect profile. ⋯ Both pills have high contraceptive reliability and are well tolerated, but with the 150/20 combination the cycle control is less effective. However, in view of the potentially increased safety profile of the 150/20 combination, many women can be expected to accept some additional discomfort due to irregular bleeding.

Over a six-month-period, from 1st March 1988 to 30th September 1988, 127 patients suspected of having ectopic gestation at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) were referred for sonographic examination, of whom 100 (78.7%) had enough data for a final diagnosis. During sonography, ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed in 31 (31%) patients, out of whom 15 (48.4%) were confirmed to have ectopic gestation at laparotomy. Of the 69 who were thought to have other gynaecological disorders at sonographic examination, 2 (2.9%) were later found to have other ectopic gestation at surgery. ⋯ An empty, bulky uterus, demonstrable adnexal mass, pseudo-gestational sac and fluid in the culde-sac, together improved the sonographic positive predictive value to 67.0%. This study has shown that sonography can be used in the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy at the KNH. However, in order to improve its reliability, further studies are recommended involving a combination of pregnancy test and sonography.

Sexuality and power relations based on gender are relevant to researchers, policymakers, and service providers in the reproductive health field, because they underlie virtually all of the behaviors and conditions that their programs address. Yet, a review of conventional treatments in the demographic and family planning literature reveals that, when they consider these topics at all, researchers typically adopt narrow definitions of sexual behavior and focus almost exclusively on risks of pregnancy and disease. This article proposes an analytic framework as a guide to researchers and family planning providers. It relates four dimensions of sexuality to reproductive health outcomes and concludes that family planning policies and programs should address a broader spectrum of sexual behaviors and meanings, consider questions of sexual enjoyment as well as risk, and confront ideologies of male entitlement that threaten women's sexual and reproductive rights and health.
