The primary aim of the haemostatic mechanism is to protect the vascular system and to keep it intact after injury in order to secure the function of tissues and organs. A second aim is to provide a matrix in wound healing and tissue repair. The regulation of this physiological mechanism is effected by a dynamic haemostatic balance comprising interactions between endothelial cells, thrombocytes, coagulation, and fibrinolysis. ⋯ Effects of disturbances in the balance are illustrated by description of cases of haemorrhagic disorders or thrombosis, and the pathophysiological aspects are surveyed. The regulation of coagulation and fibrinolysis follows in both systems the same pattern. The active enzymes (thrombin and plasmin, respectively) are formed by activation of circulating proenzymes, and inhibitors (circulating or localized) exert their modifying influences at various stages of the total process.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A search of the medical literature published since 1950 disclosed 19 cases of probable AIDS reported before the start of the current epidemic. These cases retrospectively met the Centers for Disease Control's surveillance definition of the syndrome and had a clinical course suggestive of AIDS. The reports originated from North America, Western Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. ⋯ In two instances concurrent or subsequent opportunistic infection occurred in family members. All patients died 1 month to 6 years after the initial manifestation of disease. In view of the historical data, unrecognized cases of AIDS appear to have occurred sporadically in the pre-AIDS era.

Naproxen sodium for OB/GYN use, with special reference to pain states: a review.
The effectiveness of naproxen sodium and its parent compound, naproxen, has been assessed in the treatment of a variety of obstetric and gynecologic problems, particularly pain states. This article summarizes the literature on the efficacy of the naproxen compounds in treatment of the following conditions: primary and secondary dysmenorrhea, insertion of a contraceptive intrauterine device, suction curettage, postpartum pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, gynecologic surgery, menorrhagia, premature labor and menopause. The data from the studies compiled demonstrate the usefulness of naproxen sodium or naproxen as an effective analgesic in treating pain and inflammation associated with these conditions.

The aforementioned social trends affecting women, including women in poverty, women in the labor force, and elderly women, are all ultimately related to problems of access to health care. In almost every age group, women use more health and medical services. Women are hospitalized more often, although their stays in hospitals tend to be shorter. ⋯ As the field of women's health expands and receives more emphasis, the data reflecting the experiences of large groups of women will have to be collected and analyzed ever more carefully. Information collected should include physiologic, psychosocial, and economic factors that together affect the health status of women. These data may then be used to guide health policy decision making, as well as provide a basis for health promotion and disease prevention interventions with individual clients.
