Tuberculosis presentation and outcomes in older Hispanic adults from Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Older people are at high risk of developing and dying from pulmonary infections like tuberculosis (TB), but there are few studies among them, particularly in Hispanics. To address these gaps, we sought to identify host factors associated with TB and adverse treatment outcomes in older Hispanics by conducting a cross-sectional study of TB surveillance data from Tamaulipas, Mexico (2006-2013; n = 8381). Multivariable logistic regressions were assessed for older adults (OA ≥65 years) when compared to young (YA, 18-39 years) and middle-aged adults (40-64 years). ⋯ Diabetes was not associated with adverse outcomes in OA. Although older age is a predictor of death during TB disease, OA are not prioritized by the World Health Organization for latent TB infection screening and treatment during contact investigations. With safer, short-course latent TB infection treatment available, we propose the inclusion of OA as a high-risk group in latent TB management guidelines.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is the most effective protective measure to control the spread of infections and provide protection against hospitalization and mortality during the pandemic. There was a necessity to measure public knowledge and acceptance for COVID-19 vaccines in different countries. Thus, the current study is aimed at evaluating the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the population in all regions of Saudi towards COVID-19 vaccination. ⋯ The level of knowledge, attitude, and practice differed based on different demographic characteristics. Regression analysis showed that having a low income, low education level, and middle-aged status, living in a village, and being married were associated with lower scores in knowledge, attitude, or practice. Targeted education and campaigns should be provided for these populations to increase their knowledge, attitude, and practice towards COVID-19 vaccination.

There is limited research that identifies and examines multi-level barriers to medication adherence among adults with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD); Identify multi-level barriers to medication adherence among adults with SCD; and Examine the relationship between multi-level barriers and medication adherence levels. A cross-sectional study included 130 adults (ages ≥ 18 years old) living with SCD who receive treatment/care from one of the 10 adult SCD clinics within the Networking California for sickle cell care initiative. Study measures included the medication adherence report scale (Professor Rob Horne), Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire (Professor Rob Horne), and patient reported outcomes measurement information system. ⋯ Patient beliefs about the necessity of SCD medication were insignificantly correlated with medication adherence (rs = 0.065, P = .464). Medication adherence was higher among patients who had fewer adherence barriers than multiple adherence barriers (Median medication adherence: fewer barriers = 22 vs multiple barrier = 20.50, P = .085), suggesting clinical significance although statistically insignificant. Identifying multi-level adherence barriers and examining their relationship with medication adherence will help develop targeted public health strategies to promote improved medication adherence and wellness among adults with SCD.

9.21.3 chromosomal locus predisposes to coronary heart disease (CHD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), but their overall pathological mechanism and clinical applicability remain unclear. The review uses publications of the study results of 9.21.3 chromosomal locus in association with CHD and DM2, which are important for changing the focus of clinical practice. ⋯ Using the examples of the progressive stages in understanding the role of the chromosomal locus 9p.21.3, scientific ideas were grouped, from a fragmentary study of independent pathological processes to a systematic study of the overall development of CHD and DM2. The presented review can become a source of new scientific hypotheses for further studies, the results of which can determine the general mechanism of the congenital risk of CHD and DM2 and change the focus of clinical practice.

To determine the clinical manifestations and outcomes of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children who underwent liver transplantation (LT). A retrospective study was conducted at a transplant center in Thailand to include LT recipients aged < 18 years who had been infected with COVID-19. Out of a total of 54 children, there were 31 probable cases (57.4%) diagnosed using an antigen test kit and 23 confirmed cases (42.6%) diagnosed using polymerase chain reaction (14 children) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 antigen (9 children). ⋯ Favipiravir was prescribed in most patients (90.7%). Only a few children had long COVID-19 or abnormal liver function tests lasting > 1 month (4 children, 7.4%, both). Pediatric LT recipients with COVID-19 during the delta and omicron variant pandemic reported mild symptoms despite undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.
