Cardiorenal care coordination: holistic patient care opportunities in the primary care setting for patients with chronic kidney disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) are closely linked conditions, and the presence of each condition promotes incidence and progression of the other. In this study, we sought to better understand the medical journey of patients with CKD and ASCVD and to uncover patients' and healthcare providers' (HCPs) perceptions and attitudes toward CKD and ASCVD diagnosis, treatment, and care coordination. ⋯ CKD and ASCVD are interrelated cardiometabolic conditions with underlying risk factors that can be managed in a primary care setting. However, few patients in our study considered their PCP to be the coordinator of their care for CKD or ASCVD. PCPs can and should take a more active role in educating patients and coordinating care for those with CKD and ASCVD.

Climate change and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the province of Ghardaïa in Algeria: A model-based approach to predict disease outbreaks.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease prevalent in Algeria since 2000. The disease has significant impacts on affected communities, including morbidity and social stigma. ⋯ Incorporating additional reservoir statistics such as rodent density and a human development index in the region could improve our understanding of disease transmission.

Screening tools for metabolic syndrome based on anthropometric cut-off values among Thai working adults: a community-based study.
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a universal disease of increasing prevalence, but the prevalence varies depending on ethnicity. There is a crucial need to assess the validity of anthropometric indicators and determine appropriate cut-off values for MetS screening. ⋯ The participants might not be representative of all Thai adults and we may have overestimated MetS for Thai working adults because our research focus was on the highest prevalence of MetS in the central region of Thailand.

Physical activity (PA) is an established modifiable factor for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Our objective was to assess the association of PA with mortality rates in a national sample of patients with diabetes. ⋯ The subgroup of patients with diabetes and high PA had no excess of mortality compared to the general population. PA can reduce the gap for all-cause mortality, used as an index of cardiovascular fitness and a clinical tool for the assessment of mortality risk.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by an elevation of blood glucose levels, resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The prevalence of the disease has been rapidly rising all over the globe at an alarming rate. ⋯ The treatment spectrum for the management of diabetes mellitus has rapidly developed in recent years, with new class of therapeutics and expanded indications. This article focused on the emerging therapeutic approaches other than the conventional pharmacological therapies, which include stem cell therapy, gene therapy, siRNA, nanotechnology and theranostics.
