Satisfaction with epidural and intravenous patient-controlled analgesia.
Postoperative intravenous (i.v.) versus epidural morphine patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) were compared regarding maintenance of initial PCA route, pain levels, side effects, and levels of satisfaction. Additionally, the role of preoperative attitudinal expectations in predicting postoperative levels of satisfaction with pain management as well as maintenance of initial PCA route was evaluated. ⋯ Both techniques, i.v. and epidural PCA, result in high levels of satisfaction. Satisfaction with PCA can be accurately predicted in nearly three of four patients based on initial PCA route and preoperative attitudes. Additionally, maintaining the initial treatment plan can be accurately predicted based on age and preoperative attitudes. Patient expectations about pain relief should be addressed preoperatively, particularly with younger patients, for optimal results.

Fear-avoidance behavior and anticipation of pain in patients with chronic low back pain: a randomized controlled study.
In a randomized controlled study, we investigated whether pain anticipation and fear-avoidance beliefs will lead to behavioral avoidance. ⋯ Results confirm that pain anticipation and fear-avoidance beliefs significantly influence the behavior of patients with low back pain in that they motivate avoidance behavior. Therapists must be aware of the powerful effects of cognitive processes, which can give rise to fear of pain and, consequently, avoidance behavior.

Palliative pharmaceutical care: a randomized, prospective study of telephone-based prescription and medication counseling services for treating chronic pain.
To evaluate the effects of providing a unique telephone-based pharmaceutical care program to a sample of patients enrolled at a university pain clinic in Philadelphia, Pa. We hypothesized that in comparison to routine pharmaceutical care, the telephone-based pharmaceutical care program would have a positive impact on delivery of medication, quality of life, and overall satisfaction with the pain clinic program. ⋯ This study suggests that the palliative-trained pharmacist can play an important collaborative role in managing chronic pain. Application of the pharmaceutical care model in pain medicine centers can improve satisfaction and remove some of the barriers to good pharmaceutical care facing patients with chronic pain disorders

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialNicardipine versus lidocaine for attenuating the cardiovascular response to endotracheal intubation.
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of nicardipine and lidocaine in attenuation of cardiovascular responses to endotracheal intubation. ⋯ Nicardipine can be used as an alternative to lidocaine in attenuation of cardiovascular response to tracheal intubation in patients without ischemic heart disease.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffects of sevoflurane compared with those of isoflurane on arterial oxygenation and hemodynamics during one-lung ventilation.
This study was designed to compare the effects of sevoflurane and isoflurane on Pao(2) and hemodynamic variables during one-lung ventilation (OLV) in surgical patients. ⋯ The effects of sevoflurane on PaO(2) and the hemodynamic variables were similar to those of isoflurane during TLV and OLV in the lateral decubitus position.
