Many gaps remain in finding effective, safe, and equitable treatments for children and adolescents with chronic pain and in accessing treatments in different settings. A major goal of the field is to improve assessment of pain and related experience. Valid and reliable patient-reported outcome measures are critical for advancing knowledge of clinical interventions for pediatric chronic pain. ⋯ Final recommendations included 9 patient-reported measures. Important contextual considerations are discussed, and guidance is provided regarding strengths and limitations of the recommendations. Implementation of these recommendations may be enhanced by widespread dissemination and ease of access to measurement tools.

Prevalence and Persistence of Prescription Opioid Use Following Hospital Discharge After Childbirth: An Australian Population-Based Cohort Study.
Opioid analgesics are used for acute postpartum pain relief but carry risks, including persistent long-term opioid use. Our primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of persistent use following hospital discharge after childbirth. ⋯ The results of this cohort study indicate that Australian women have a higher prevalence of opioid use following CD compared to VB. One in 19 women dispensed an opioid postdischarge used opioids persistently. Careful monitoring of opioid therapy following childbirth is warranted, particularly among women with characteristics we identified as high risk for persistent opioid use.

Chronic pain in children and adolescents (CPCA) is widespread with an increasing prevalence. It is associated with a decreased quality of life and an increased parental work loss. Accordingly, CPCA may pose a substantial economic burden for patients, health care payers, and society. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize (1) the results of existing cost-of-illness studies (COIs) for CPCA and (2) the evidence of economic evaluations (EEs) of interventions for CPCA. ⋯ The methodology across studies was heterogeneous limiting the comparability. However, it is concluded that CPCA is associated with high overall costs, which were reduced in all EEs. From a health-economic perspective, efforts should address the prevention and early detection of CPCA followed by specialized pain treatment.

Recovery Trajectories in Children Requiring 3 or More Days of Invasive Ventilation.
To characterize health-related quality of life (HRQL) and functional recovery trajectories and risk factors for prolonged impairments among critically ill children receiving greater than or equal to 3 days of invasive ventilation. ⋯ Impairments in HRQL and functional status as well as health resource use were common among children with acute respiratory failure. Early therapy consultation was a modifiable characteristic associated with shorter duration of worsened HRQL in older patients.

Observational StudyPerioperative Anesthesia-Related Complications and Risk Factors in Children: A Cross-Sectional Observation Study in Rwanda.
Despite an increasing awareness of the unmet burden of surgical conditions, information on perioperative complications in children remains limited especially in low-income countries such as Rwanda. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of perioperative anesthesia-related adverse events and to explore potential risk factors associated with them among pediatric surgical patients in public referral hospitals in Rwanda. ⋯ The rate of perioperative complications, including death, for children undergoing surgery in tertiary care hospitals in Rwanda was high. Quality improvement measures are needed to decrease this rate among surgical pediatric patients in this low resource setting.
