Risk factors for complications after emergency surgery for paediatric appendicitis: a national prospective observational cohort study.
Appendicectomy is a common procedure in children with a low risk of mortality, however, complication rates and risk factors are largely unknown. This study aimed to characterise the incidence and epidemiology of postoperative complications in children undergoing appendicectomy in the UK. This multicentre prospective observational cohort study, which included children aged 1-16 y who underwent surgery for suspected appendicitis, was conducted between November 2019 and January 2022. ⋯ Other risk factors for complications included: ASA physical status ≥ 3 (OR (95%CI) 4.05 (1.70-9.67), p = 0.002); raised C-reactive protein (OR 95%CI 1.01 (1.00-1.01), p < 0.001); pyrexia (OR (95%CI) 1.77(1.20-2.63), p = 0.004); and peri-operative oxygen supplementation (OR (95%CI) 4.20 (1.44-12.24), p = 0.009). In the UK NHS, which is a universally accessible healthcare system, ethnicity, but not socio-economic status, was associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications in children having surgery for acute appendicitis. Further evaluations and interventions are required to address this health inequality in keeping with NHS and international priorities.

Retrospective Validation of a Computerized Physiologic Equation to Predict Minute Ventilation Needs in Critically Ill Children.
Mechanical ventilation (MV) is pervasive among critically ill children. We sought to validate a computerized physiologic equation to predict minute ventilation requirements in children and test its performance against clinician actions in an in silico trial. ⋯ A computerized equation to predict minute ventilation requirements outperformed clinicians' ventilator adjustments in 75% of ABGs from critically ill children in this retrospective analysis. Prospective validation studies are needed.

Observational StudyRotational Thromboelastometry and Clot Waveform Analysis as Point-of-Care Tests for Diagnosis of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Critically Ill Children in Thailand.
This study aimed to determine the test performances of rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) and activated partial thromboplastin time-based clot waveform analysis (aPTT-CWA) compared with the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis disseminated intravascular coagulation (ISTH-DIC) score for diagnosis of overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (ODIC) in critically ill children. Prognostic indicators of DIC complications were also evaluated. ⋯ ROTEM and aPTT-CWA were valuable diagnostic tools in critically ill children who might require point-of-care tests. Min2 showed significant clinical implications for predicting bleeding events in this population.

Management of Pediatric Convulsive Status Epilepticus From the Perspective of Emergency Nurses: A Cross-sectional, Multicenter Study.
Pediatric convulsive status epilepticus is one of the most common neurologic emergencies and should be managed by health care professionals as soon as possible based on current guidelines. This study aimed to determine the nursing approaches and management of pediatric convulsive status epilepticus from the perspective of emergency nurses in Turkey. ⋯ As health care professionals and important members of the health team, emergency nurses have the responsibility to manage pediatric convulsive status epilepticus in the fastest and the most appropriate way based on current practice guidelines in emergency departments. When intravenous access is not available, nonintravenous benzodiazepines should be considered in the first-line treatment of pediatric convulsive status epilepticus, followed by immediate intravenous access.
