Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Randomized trial comparing traditional Chinese medical acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and self-care education for chronic low back pain.
Because the value of popular forms of alternative care for chronic back pain remains uncertain, we compared the effectiveness of acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and self-care education for persistent back pain. ⋯ Therapeutic massage was effective for persistent low back pain, apparently providing long-lasting benefits. Traditional Chinese Medical acupuncture was relatively ineffective. Massage might be an effective alternative to conventional medical care for persistent back pain.

Active therapy for chronic low back pain part 1. Effects on back muscle activation, fatigability, and strength.
Randomized prospective study of the effects of three types of active therapy on back muscle function in chronic low back pain patients. ⋯ Significant changes in muscle performance were observed in all three active therapy groups post-therapy, which appeared to be mainly due to changes in neural activation of the lumbar muscles and psychological changes concerning, for example, motivation or pain tolerance.

Active therapy for chronic low back pain: part 2. Effects on paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area, fiber type size, and distribution.
Randomized prospective study to compare the effects of three types of active therapy on the back muscle structure of chronic low back pain patients. ⋯ Three months active therapy is not sufficient to reverse the typical "glycolytic" profile of the muscles of cLBP patients or to effect major changes in backmuscle size. The alterations in muscle performance observed (increased strength and endurance; Part 1) werenot explainable on the basis of structural changes within the muscle.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEndoscopic foraminoplasty: a prospective study on 250 consecutive patients with independent evaluation.
This study focused on the efficacy of endoscopic decompression of the foramen guided by endoscopic aware-state pain source definition. ⋯ Endoscopic laser foraminoplasty provides a minimalist means of exploring the extraforaminal zone, the foramen, the disc, and the epidural space and performing discectomy, lateral recess decompression, osteophytectomy, and neural mobilization. Performed in the aware state, it serves to identify and localize precisely the causal source of pain in multilevel disc disease, in revision surgery, and in the infirm and elderly without open fusion or decompression.

Effects of aerobic exercise on low back pain patients in treatment.
Aerobic exercise (AE) has been prescribed to improve fitness and well-being in apparently healthy individuals and cardiac, orthopedic, and other patient populations. AE has not previously been studied as a sole treatment for low back pain patients (LBPP). ⋯ Low to moderate aerobic exercise appears to improve mood states and work status and reduce the need for physical therapy referrals and pain medication prescriptions for LBPP in the care of a neurosurgeon.
