Outcome of a High-Frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (hfTENS) Device for Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
This controlled trial examined the benefit of a high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (hfTENS) device (the Quell, NeuroMetrix, Inc., Waltham, MA, U.S.A.) for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). ⋯ These results suggest that hfTENS can have a moderate effect in reducing pain and improving quality of life in low back pain patients. Further trials designed to determine the mechanism of action of the hfTENS are needed.

[Effectiveness of a risk-tailored short intervention to prevent chronic low back pain : A cluster-randomized study in general practice].
A subgroup of patients with acute low back pain (LBP) will develop chronic LBP. Risk factors summarized as yellow flags are fear-avoidance beliefs, depression, catastrophizing, and work-related problems. ⋯ A risk-tailored short intervention to prevent chronic LBP in general practice had no significant impact on the clinical course compared to care as usual. A subgroup analysis comparing adherent and non-adherent patients suggests that it is possible to have a positive impact on patient-relevant outcomes.

Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of job adjustment, pain location and exercise on sick leave due to lumbopelvic pain in pregnancy: a longitudinal study.
Objective: To identify factors associated with sick leave due to lumbopelvic pain (LPP) in pregnancy. Design: Prospective cohort study using participants from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) designed to study the effect of exercise during pregnancy on pregnancy related diseases. Setting: St. ⋯ Facilitating early job adjustment might be a precaution to keep more pregnant women in work. Allocation to an exercise group tended to reduce the risk of sick leave in late pregnancy. Lumbar myofascial pain is a major contributor to chronic low back pain. Acupuncture has been applied as an effective treatment for chronic low back pain worldwide. However, few critical systematic reviews focus on the effect of acupuncture on chronic low back pain caused by lumbar myofascial pain have been published. The study aims to evaluate the current evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture for chronic low back pain caused by lumbar myofascial pain. ⋯ The study will provide evidence to illustrate acupuncture is an effective therapeutic intervention for chronic low back pain caused by lumbar myofascial pain.

Nutrient supply and nucleus pulposus cell function: effects of the transport properties of the cartilage endplate and potential implications for intradiscal biologic therapy.
Intradiscal biologic therapy is a promising strategy for managing intervertebral disc degeneration. However, these therapies require a rich nutrient supply, which may be limited by the transport properties of the cartilage endplate (CEP). This study investigated how fluctuations in CEP transport properties impact nutrient diffusion and disc cell survival and function. ⋯ CEP transport properties dramatically affect NP cell survival/function. Degeneration-related CEP matrix changes could hinder the success of biologic therapies that require increased nutrient supply.
