Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPrevalence of low back pain and its effect on health-related quality of life in adolescents.
To assess the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in adolescents and the clinical features of LBP in 2 European countries and to evaluate the effect of LBP on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) using standardized validated generic and disease-specific instruments. ⋯ Low back pain in adolescents is a prevalent symptom with overall low associated disability and little effect on health-related quality of life. A subset of adolescents in whom LBP is associated with whole-body pain report significant impairment and deserve more attention.

To describe the course of chronic low back pain in an inception cohort and to identify prognostic markers at the onset of chronicity. ⋯ More than one third of patients with recent onset, non-radicular chronic low back pain recover within 12 months. The prognosis is less favourable for those who have taken previous sick leave for low back pain, have high disability levels or high pain intensity at onset of chronic low back pain, have lower education, perceive themselves as having a high risk of persistent pain, and were born outside Australia.

Analgesic efficacy and tolerability of flupirtine vs. tramadol in patients with subacute low back pain: a double-blind multicentre trial*.
To assess the efficacy and tolerability of flupirtine in comparison with tramadol for the treatment of moderate to severe subacute low back pain (LBP). ⋯ Flupirtine 100 mg three times daily was associated with a reduction in pain and improvements in functional capacity equivalent to that observed with tramadol 50 mg three times daily, and was better tolerated, when administered to patients with subacute back pain for one week. The limitations of this study were the lack of a placebo control and the short (7-day) duration of the study.

Quality of life, resource consumption and costs of spinal cord stimulation versus conventional medical management in neuropathic pain patients with failed back surgery syndrome (PROCESS trial).
Chronic back and leg pain conditions result in patients' loss of function, reduced quality of life and increased costs to the society. ⋯ The addition of SCS to CMM in patients with neuropathic leg and back pain results in higher costs to health systems but also generates important improvements in patients' EQ-5D over the same period.

Low back pain in drivers exposed to whole body vibration: analysis of a dose-response pattern.
Analysis of a dose-response pattern between exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) and low back pain (LBP) in a group of drivers. ⋯ The investigation found a dose-response pattern between WBV exposure and driving-related LBP. No indication of a dose-response pattern was found between WBV exposure and 12-month LBP. Although this dose-response pattern is only an indication, these findings imply that WBV exposure might contribute to the onset of driving-related LBP.
