MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of various diseases. Quantitative PCR is the most frequently used method of measuring expression levels of miRNA. ⋯ Researchers tend to prefer the most stable reference genes in each experiment. The review includes reference genes for the following tissue types: gliomas, lung cancer, melanoma, gastric cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, rectal cancer, blood tumors, and placental tissues.

Regulatory T (Treg) cells play an important role in implantation of the embryo and maintenance of pregnancy after allogeneic mating. Implantation failure, miscarriage, and preeclampsia are associated with decreased numbers of Treg cells or with dysfunctional Treg cells. Treg cells are classified into naturally occurring Treg (nTreg) cells or thymus-derived Treg (tTreg) cells that differentiate in the thymus and induce tolerance to self-antigens, while induced Treg (iTreg) or peripheral Treg (pTreg) cells differentiate in the periphery and induce transient tolerance to foreign antigens. ⋯ In addition to the volume of paternal/fetal antigen-specific CD8+ T cells, the number of paternal/fetal antigen-specific Treg cells, which protect the fetus/placenta against maternal immune cell attack, increases after the second trimester of pregnancy. Clonal Treg cells which are surrogate markers of paternal/fetal antigen-specific Treg cells in humans may be involved in the development of preeclampsia during the mid- to late pregnancy stage, as evidenced by their downregulation in the decidua of preeclamptic cases. This review summarizes recent findings on Treg cells and discusses the roles, in the maintenance of pregnancy, of different types of Treg cells such as paternal/fetal antigen-specific Treg, pregnancy-associated memory Treg, nTreg (or tTreg), and iTreg (or pTreg cells).

Providing patient-specific clinical care is an expanding focus for medical professionals and researchers, more commonly referred to as personalized or precision medicine. The goal of using a patient-centric approach is to provide safer care while also increasing the probability of therapeutic success through careful consideration of the influence of certain extrinsic and intrinsic human factors in developing the patient care plan. Of increasing influence on patient care is the phenotype and genotype information gathered from employing various next-generation sequencing methods. Guided by and partnered with our civilian colleagues, clinical components within the DoD are embracing and advancing genomic medicine in many facets-from the bench to the bedside-and in many therapeutic areas, from Psychiatry to Oncology. In this PubMed-based review, we describe published clinical research and interventions within the DoD using genome-informed data and emphasize precision medicine efforts in earlier stages of development with the potential to revolutionize the approach to therapeutics. ⋯ There are several programs and studies within the DoD, which investigate or use gene-based biomarkers or gene variants to deliver more precise clinical assessment and treatment. These genome-based precision medicine efforts aim to optimize the clinical care of DoD beneficiaries, particularly service members in the operational environment.

Review Meta AnalysisRecombinant human thyrotropin (rhTSH)-aided radioiodine treatment for non-toxic multinodular goitre.
Multinodular goitre is common in women. Treatments for non-toxic multinodular goitre include surgery, levothyroxine suppressive therapy, and radioiodine. Radioiodine therapy is the only non-surgical alternative for non-toxic multinodular goitre. However, a high amount of radioiodine is needed to enable the thyroid nodules to adequately take up the radioiodine, because the multinodular goitre takes up a low amount of iodine. Recombinant human thyrotropin (rhTSH) has been used to increase radioiodine uptake and reduce thyroid volume of the multinodular goitre. Whether the improved reduction of the goitre resulting from rhTSH-stimulated radioiodine therapy is beneficial to the person remains controversial. ⋯ RhTSH-aided radioiodine treatment for non-toxic multinodular goitre, compared to radioiodine alone, probably increased the risk of hypothyroidism but probably led to a greater reduction in thyroid volume. Data on QoL and costs were sparse or missing.
