ReviewVeterinary and human anaesthesia: an overview of some parallels and contrasts.
The history of human and veterinary anaesthesia is both intertwined and parallel. Physicians and anaesthetists often first experimented on animals and developments from human anaesthesia have been incorporated into veterinary medicine. Within veterinary medicine, anaesthesia is a specialty discipline as it is in human medicine. ⋯ Furthermore, some agents, particularly alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonists and ketamine, are used very widely in veterinary practice. Also in contrast to most human anaesthesia, in large animal and exotic animal practice the patients can present a physical danger to the anaesthetist. The most notable contrast between human and veterinary anaesthesia is in the reported perioperative complication and mortality rates, with a species dependent perianaesthetic mortality of up to 2% in dogs, cats and horses and greater than 2% in guinea pigs and birds, which is up to 100-fold higher than in human anaesthesia.

ReviewBeneficial effects of physical exercise on neuroplasticity and cognition.
The human brain adapts to changing demands by altering its functional and structural properties ("neuroplasticity") which results in learning and acquiring skills. Convergent evidence from both human and animal studies suggests that physical activity facilitates neuroplasticity of certain brain structures and as a result cognitive functions. Animal studies have identified an enhancement of neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, angiogenesis and the release of neurotrophins as neural mechanisms mediating beneficial cognitive effects of physical exercise. ⋯ The results suggest that physical exercise may trigger processes facilitating neuroplasticity and, thereby, enhances an individual's capacity to respond to new demands with behavioral adaptations. Indeed, some recent studies have suggested that combining physical and cognitive training might result in a mutual enhancement of both interventions. Moreover, new data suggest that to maintain the neuro-cognitive benefits induced by physical exercise, an increase in the cardiovascular fitness level must be maintained.

Association between CDH13 variants and cardiometabolic and vascular phenotypes in a Korean population.
Although some CDH13 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been shown to be determinants of blood adiponectin levels, the clinical implications of CDH13 variants are not yet completely understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of SNPs of CDH13 on metabolic and vascular phenotypes. ⋯ These results provide evidence that CDH13 variants are associated with metabolic traits and carotid atherosclerosis in Koreans. This study shows the multifaceted effects of CDH13 variants on cardiometabolic risk.

During attention to a painful cutaneous laser stimulus, event-related causality (ERC) has been detected in recordings from subdural electrodes implanted directly over cortical modules for the treatment of epilepsy. However, these studies afforded limited sampling of modules and did not examine interactions with a nonpainful stimulus as a control. We now sample scalp EEG to test the hypothesis that attention to the laser stimulus is associated with poststimulus ERC interactions that are different from those with attention to a nonpainful stimulus. ⋯ Furthermore, scalp EEG frontal channels play a driver role while parietal temporal channels play a receiver role during both tasks, although this does not prove that these channels are connected. Sites at which large numbers of ERC interactions were found for both laser attention and distraction tasks (critical sites) were located at Cz, Pz, and C3. Stimulation leading to disruption of sites of these pain-related interactions may produce analgesia for acute pain.

GFI1B mutation causes a bleeding disorder with abnormal platelet function.
GFI1B is a transcription factor important for erythropoiesis and megakaryocyte development but previously unknown to be associated with human disease. ⋯ GFI1B mutation represents a novel human bleeding disorder, and the described phenotype identifies GFI1B as a critical regulator of platelet shape, number, and function.
