Effect of patient sex on general anaesthesia and recovery.
Numerous studies have shown that women emerge faster from general anaesthesia than men, and differ in their postoperative recovery profile. The extent and underlying mechanisms for these sex-related differences in general anaesthesia are unclear. ⋯ Patient sex is an independent factor influencing the response to anaesthesia and recovery after surgery. Women emerged faster from general anaesthesia but their overall quality of recovery was poorer. Female sex hormones, particularly progesterone, might be involved, with premenopausal women having faster recovery time but poor overall recovery.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAnesthetic management of transcatheter aortic valve implantation with transaxillary approach.
To describe the anesthetic management of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with the transaxillary approach. ⋯ Transaxillary TAVI is feasible in high-risk patients with aortic stenosis and peripheral vasculopathy. Nevertheless, severe procedural complications are possible, and anesthesiologists should be prepared to assist in the management of these conditions.

Laryngoscope plastic blades in scheduled general anesthesia patients: a comparative randomized study.
To compare two brands of disposable plastic laryngoscope blades, Vital View plastic blades and Heine XP plastic blades, with the reusable Heine Classic+ Macintosh metal blades. ⋯ Intubation may be more challenging when using Heine XP plastic blades but no significant difference exists between Vital-View plastic blades and Heine Classic+ metal blades.

The impact of mode of anaesthesia on postoperative recovery from fast-track abdominal hysterectomy: a randomised clinical trial.
to determine whether the duration of hospital stay after abdominal hysterectomy in a fast-track setting differed between women operated under general anaesthesia or in spinal anaesthesia with intrathecal morphine. ⋯ in a fast-track model the duration of hospitalisation after abdominal hysterectomy was < 50 hours, independent of the mode of anaesthesia. Spinal anaesthesia reduced the need for postoperative morphine compared with general anaesthesia. In order to improve patient recovery after gynaecological surgery further studies based on fast-track programmes are needed.

Efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of sugammadex for the reversal of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade in elderly patients.
The management of elderly patients can be challenging for anesthesiologists for many reasons, including altered pharmacokinetics and dynamics. This study compared the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of sugammadex for moderate rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade reversal in adult (aged 18-64 yr) versus elderly adult (aged 65 yr or older) patients. ⋯ Sugammadex facilitates rapid reversal from moderate rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade in adults of all ages.
