Effects of thoracic epidural anesthesia/analgesia on the stress response, pain relief, hospital stay, and treatment costs of patients with esophageal carcinoma undergoing thoracic surgery: A single-center, randomized controlled trial.
Appropriate postoperative pain management can improve outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer (EC). ⋯ Thoracic epidural anesthesia/analgesia can reduce the stress response, improve postoperative recovery and reduce hospital stay and costs for patients with EC.

Pain control using liposomal bupivacaine versus bupivacaine for robotic assisted thoracic surgery.
Background Despite a trend towards minimally invasive thoracic surgeries over thoracotomies, patients can still experience significant post-operative pain. Literature on the use of liposomal bupivacaine in patients undergoing robotic surgeries is lacking. Objective To compare pain control via intercostal nerve block with liposomal bupivacaine to bupivacaine for patients undergoing robotic assisted thoracic surgery. ⋯ The frequency of ketorolac use on the first post-operative day was lower for those who received liposomal bupivacaine. There were no significant differences in opioid requirements, length of stay, or rate of complications. Conclusions There was no significant difference in post-operative pain control between patients receiving liposomal bupivacaine and bupivacaine for robotic assisted surgery.

IMproved MAnagement (IM-MA study) in cancer-related pain: the value of a joint approach by an integrated team of radiotherapist and anesthetist.
Purpose of this study was to retrospectively review our experience of multidisciplinary clinic providing a joint approach by radiation oncologist and anesthetist for patients with cancer pain to evaluate the adequacy and the IMprovement in MAnagement (IM-MA study) of this symptom. ⋯ A multidisciplinary Team for Pain Management improved the clinical management, optimizing pain control and increasing adequacy of pharmacological management. The TPM intervention seems particularly worth for patients presenting specific features including BTcP, neuropathic pain, severe pain due to bone metastases, and any potential candidate to radiotherapy. Larger series and QoL questionnaires are required to confirm these results.

Clinical TrialVirtual reality as complementary pain therapy in hospitalized patients with sickle cell disease.
Due to incomplete management of vaso-occlusive pain episodes (VOE) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), we sought to determine if immersive VR would be feasible for inpatients. Secondarily, we hypothesized that a single VR session would improve the VOE pain experience. ⋯ VR therapy was feasible in a cohort of patients with SCD admitted for VOE. In addition to standard therapies, VR may help reduce the pain experience with SCD VOE. Further study is required to determine the impact of VR therapy on opioid usage and length of stay in hospital.
