Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Relationship between change in pain intensity and functional outcomes in patients with chronic pain receiving twice daily extended-release hydrocodone bitartrate.
Evaluate levels of pain relief achieved in patients with chronic pain treated with hydrocodone-extended release (HC-ER) up to 48 weeks and show that these levels were associated with secondary functional and global outcomes. ⋯ Moderate or substantial levels of pain relief were associated with the greatest functional improvements in patients treated with HC-ER. These results may help define success of opioid therapy and determine if it should be continued or an alternative treatment should be tried.

Pediatric Pain Management in the Emergency Department: The Triage Nurses' Perspective.
Understanding triage nurses' perspectives of pain management is essential for timely pain care for children in the emergency department. Objectives of this study were to describe the triage pain treatment protocols used, knowledge of pain management modalities, and barriers and attitudes towards implementation of pain treatment protocols. ⋯ Triage nurses are willing to implement pain protocols for children in the emergency department, but differences in comfort and experience exist between PTED and GTED nurses. Provision of triage initiated pain protocols and associated education may empower nurses to improve care for children in pain in the emergency department.

[Sedation and analgesia practices among Spanish neonatal intensive care units].
Pain management and sedation is a priority in neonatal intensive care units. A study was designed with the aim of determining current clinical practice as regards sedation and analgesia in neonatal intensive care units in Spain, as well as to identify factors associated with the use of sedative and analgesic drugs. ⋯ Almost half of the neonates admitted to intensive care units receive sedatives or analgesics. There is significant variation between Spanish neonatal units as regards sedation and analgesia prescribing. Our results provide evidence on the "state of the art", and could serve as the basis of preparing clinical practice guidelines at a national level.

[Pain therapy in German long-term care facilities in a European comparison : Results of the SHELTER study].
A considerable number of nursing home residents suffering from pain are insufficiently treated. International comparisons of pain management in German (GER) and other European (EU) nursing homes are still lacking. ⋯ The data demonstrate significant deficits in the recognition and treatment of pain in residents living in German or other European nursing home facilities. Further scope for improvement is seen in better recognition of relevant pain, in the adequate use of PRN and long-term medication and especially in the use of activating non-pharmacological treatment.

MiDAS ENCORE: Randomized Controlled Study Design and Protocol.
Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used for treatment of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). ESIs are generally administered after failure of conservative therapy. For LSS patients suffering from neurogenic claudication, the mild® procedure provides an alternative to ESIs via minimally invasive lumbar decompression. Both ESIs and mild offer interventional pain treatment options for LSS patients experiencing neurogenic claudication refractory to more conservative therapies. ⋯ This prospective, multi-center, randomized controlled study will provide Level I evidence of the safety and effectiveness of mild versus ESIs in managing neurogenic claudication symptoms in LSS patients.
