Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
A randomized controlled trial of postoperative intravenous acetaminophen plus thoracic epidural analgesia vs. thoracic epidural analgesia alone after gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
Acetaminophen is used in multimodal therapy for postoperative pain management. However, the additional effects of acetaminophen in combination with thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) are not well understood. This prospective, multicenter randomized study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of routine intravenous (i.v.) acetaminophen in combination with TEA for the management of postoperative pain in gastric cancer surgery. ⋯ In gastric cancer surgery patients, routine i.v. acetaminophen in combination with TEA provides superior postoperative pain management compared with TEA alone.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyPredictive Factors of Postdischarge Narcotic Use After Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of patient factors, amount of in-hospital postoperative narcotics, and pain scores on postdischarge narcotic use (PDNU). ⋯ Amount of postoperative in-hospital use of narcotic medications and BPI scores can be valuable predictors of PDNU in patients undergoing pelvic reconstructive surgery.

Effect of 3D Printing Individualized Ankle-Foot Orthosis on Plantar Biomechanics and Pain in Patients with Plantar Fasciitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
BACKGROUND Traditional ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are not effective in treating plantar fasciitis, while customized 3-dimensional (3D) printed ankle-foot orthoses are effective in treating many ankle-foot diseases. This study investigated the effects of customized 3D printed AFOs on biomechanics and comfort of the plantar foot in plantar fasciitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty patients with bilateral plantar fasciitis aged 31-60 years participated in this study. ⋯ The comfort scores reported by the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study supports the efficiency of customized 3D printing AFO for reducing damage associated with plantar lesions and improving comfort in patients with plantar fasciitis compared with prefabricated AFO. Customized AFO is useful in the treatment of plantar fasciitis compared with prefabricated AFOs.

Effects of thoracic epidural anesthesia/analgesia on the stress response, pain relief, hospital stay, and treatment costs of patients with esophageal carcinoma undergoing thoracic surgery: A single-center, randomized controlled trial.
Appropriate postoperative pain management can improve outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer (EC). ⋯ Thoracic epidural anesthesia/analgesia can reduce the stress response, improve postoperative recovery and reduce hospital stay and costs for patients with EC.

Comparison of Ultrasound-Guided Supraclavicular and Interscalene Brachial Plexus Blocks in Postoperative Pain Management After Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery.
The interscalene brachial plexus block (ISBB) is an effective procedure for minimizing postoperative opioid consumption and pain following arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The ultrasound (US)-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block (SCBB) seems to be an alternative technique for arthroscopic shoulder surgery. However, evidence is lacking regarding the impact of SCBB on postoperative pain management and recovery after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of SCBB with ISBB in terms of postoperative pain and quality of recovery after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. ⋯ This study showed that US-guided SCBB is as effective as ISBB in reducing postoperative pain and improving the quality of recovery for arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
