Randomized Controlled TrialComparing the effect of patients preferred music and Swedish massage on anticipatory anxiety in patients with burn injury: Randomized controlled clinical trial.
Effective strategies should be considered for reducing pain and anxiety and improving burn patients' well-being. This study was aimed to compare the effect of preferred music and Swedish massage on pain anticipatory anxiety in burn patients. ⋯ According to the results, combining both Swedish massage and preferred music was more effective in reducing anticipatory anxiety in burn patients. Health care providers, particularly, nurses can provide these two noninvasive and economical interventions simultaneously and benefits the synergistic effect of them in burn patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Pragmatic Clinical TrialCustom foot orthoses improve first-step pain in individuals with unilateral plantar fasciopathy: a pragmatic randomised controlled trial.
Foot orthoses are routinely used to treat plantar fasciopathy in clinical practice. However, minimal evidence exists as to the effect of both truly custom designed foot orthoses, as well as that of the shoe the foot orthoses are placed into. This study investigated the effect of wearing custom foot orthoses and new athletic footwear on first-step pain, average 24-h pain and plantar fascia thickness in people with unilateral plantar fasciopathy over 12 weeks. ⋯ Custom foot orthoses in new shoes improve first-step pain and reduce plantar fascia thickness over a period of 12 weeks compared to new shoes alone or a sham intervention.

Efficacy of the Buzzy System for pain relief during venipuncture in children: a randomized controlled trial.
procedural pain is a significant issue for paediatric patients. In particular, needle pain is amongst the most stressful for children. Studies revealed that a large number of children do not receive adequate pain prevention during the procedures. Neglecting the prevention of needle pain can cause several psychological effects such as anxiety and phobias, and increase perceptions of pain in the future. We aimed to verify the efficacy of Buzzy System in reducing pain during venipuncture. ⋯ The Buzzy System combined to distraction cards showed a greater reduction of perceived pain than "magic glove" technique. This study underlines the importance of active involvement of caregivers during procedural pain in children. Pediatric nurses have an important role in empowering children and caregivers to be interactive during venipunctures.

Randomized Controlled TrialScheduled Intravenous Acetaminophen Improves Patient Satisfaction With Postcraniotomy Pain Management: A Prospective, Randomized, Placebo-controlled, Double-blind Study.
Postcraniotomy pain can be difficult to manage with opioids due to opioid-related side effects, including drowsiness, nausea/vomiting, confusion, and pupillary changes, potentially masking the signs of postoperative neurological deterioration. Intravenous (IV) acetaminophen, a nonopioid analgesic, has been reported to have opioid-sparing effects after abdominal and orthopedic surgeries. This study investigates whether IV acetaminophen has similar effects after craniotomy. ⋯ IV acetaminophen, as adjunctive therapy for craniotomy procedures, did not show an opioid-sparing effect in patients for the 24 hours after craniotomy; however, it was associated with improved patient satisfaction regarding overall pain control.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIntra- versus postoperative initiation of pain control via a thoracic epidural catheter for lumbar spinal fusion surgery: a randomised trial.
Thoracic epidural anesthesia (TEA) is one of the pillars of perioperative pain care. Particularly for spine surgery which causes significant postoperative pain TEA seems like an appealing option. However, beneficial effects of a TEA are questionable when the catheter is not used intraoperatively, a decision that is usually based on the surgeon's wish to perform immediate neurological examination postoperatively. ⋯ Epidural catheters used intraoperatively during TLIF are feasible, significantly reduce pain, intra- and postoperative use of opioids and do not influence the quality of neurological tests directly after the surgical procedure.
