Mortality from cardiovascular disease in the Middle East is projected to increase substantially in the coming decades. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) continues to raise interest, but data from the Middle East is limited, especially in non-diabetic patients. This study was conducted to ascertain the prevalence of MS and frequency of its components, individually and in combination, in a male population presenting with ACS, but without a previous diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ In ACS patients, without previous history of DM, MS is highly prevalent. Reduced HDL, elevated FBG and triglycerides were the most frequent metabolic components. The majority had multiple components. These findings raise alarm and show that drug therapy alone may not be fully effective, unless the underlying risk factors causing MS, such as weight and exercise, are also tackled.

Detection of Mycoplasma genitalium from male primary urine specimens: an epidemiologic dichotomy with Trichomonas vaginalis.
A total of 2750 male urines subjected to a transcription-mediated amplification (TMA)-based Mycoplasma genitalium assay yielded 188 positive results (6.84%). This rate was similar to Chlamydia trachomatis (6.87%; P = 0.96) and greater than Neisseria gonorrhoeae (4.0%) and Trichomonas vaginalis (2.3%; P < 0.0002). ⋯ In 209 community encounters with at least 1 STI, 22.0% exhibited sole detection of M. genitalium (P = 0.0007 versus sole M. genitalium detection in STI clinic males), while 18.7% had sole detection of T. vaginalis (P < 0.0002 versus detection in STI clinic males). TMA-based M. genitalium screening identifies additional cases of nongonococcal urethritis.

Perception and practice of contraception among male soldiers in Sobi barracks, Ilorin, Nigeria.
There is a popular belief among the general population that Nigerian soldiers tend to have large families but this has not been substantiated with evidence-based research. The Nigerian military health authority implements female-targetted contraception strategies, with less focus on their husbands; who are the dominant fertility determinants. ⋯ The study revealed a high approval and willingness to discuss contraception with their spouses/partners but low contraceptive use.

The increase in cardiovascular events has necessitated the identification of possible predictors that can help in predicting atherogenicity. ⋯ Sedentary status among young males is associated with high atherogenic risk in the presence of normal lipid and anthropometric parameters. Both central and general measures of adiposity predict less than half of the atherogenic risk in sedentary young males.
