The impact of music interventions on anxiety for adult cancer patients: a meta-analysis and systematic review.
Listening to music can positively benefit neurophysiological and emotional responses as well as promote relaxation, which may be especially beneficial for cancer patients undergoing painful and anxiety inducing treatments. The purpose of the present study was to conduct an evidenced-based systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of music interventions to reduce anxiety for adult cancer patients undergoing medical treatment. ⋯ The meta-analytic results failed to demonstrate a positive effect on anxiety among adult cancer patients in treatment but may in part be attributed to the small sample size. These findings are in contrast to a prior meta-analysis that analyzed all studies regardless of methodological rigor. More research is needed to ascertain the most optimal intervention methodology and which cancer populations or treatment modalities are appropriate for such an intervention.

Review Meta AnalysisHydration in advanced cancer: can bioelectrical impedance analysis improve the evidence base? A systematic review of the literature.
Decisions surrounding the administration of clinically assisted hydration to patients dying of cancer can be challenging because of the limited understanding of hydration in advanced cancer and a lack of evidence to guide health care professionals. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been used to assess hydration in various patient groupings, but evidence for its use in advanced cancer is limited. ⋯ The benefits and burdens of providing clinically assisted hydration to patients dying of cancer are unclear. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis shows promise as a hydration assessment tool but requires further study in advanced cancer. Innovative methodologies for research are required to add to the evidence base and ultimately improve the care for the dying.

Review Meta AnalysisSmoking cessation interventions and cessation rates in the oncology population: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.
To evaluate tobacco smoking cessation interventions and cessation rates in the oncology population through a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ Our systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate that tobacco cessation interventions in the oncology population, in both the short-term and long-term follow-up groups, do not significantly affect cessation rates. The perioperative period, though, may represent an important teachable moment with regard to smoking cessation.

Review Meta AnalysisIncidence and risk of treatment-related mortality in cancer patients treated with EGFR-TKIs: a meta-analysis of 22 phase III randomized controlled trials.
Epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) have become the cornerstone in the treatment of lung cancers that harbor EGFR mutations, but also play an important role in the treatment of other lung cancers and have been investigated among various types of solid tumors. However, these drugs have been associated with an increase in the risk of potentially life-threatening adverse event, such as arterial and venous thrombotic events. We performed a meta-analysis to determine the incidence and risk of fatal adverse events (FAEs) in cancer patients treated with EGFR-TKIs. ⋯ No increase in FAEs was detected in any prespecified subgroup. Additionally, using EGFR-TKIs as salvage treatment significantly reduced the risk of FAEs when compared to the controls (RR 0.51, 95%CI: 0.29-0.87, p = 0.013). In conclusion, this analysis suggests that the use of EGFR-TKIs does not increase the risk of FAEs in patients with advanced solid tumors, and EGFR-TKIs are safety and tolerable for cancer patients, especially for those previously treated patients.

Review Meta AnalysisAssessment and management of adult cancer pain: a systematic review and synthesis of recent qualitative studies aimed at developing insights for managing barriers and optimizing facilitators within a comprehensive framework of patient care.
Cancer pain is a common, burdensome problem, which is not well managed despite evidence-based guidelines. ⋯ Findings highlight the need to integrate patient/family education within improved communication, individualize care, use more nonpharmacological strategies, empower patients/families to self-manage pain, and reorganize multidisciplinary roles around patient-centered care and outcomes. These conclusions require validation via consensus and intervention trials.
