Endotracheal intubation is a lifesaving procedure that is reportedly associated to a significant risk of adverse events. Recent trials have reported that the use of videolaryngoscope and of a stylet might limit this risk during emergency intubation. ⋯ In this large French survey, the majority of EDs recommended direct laryngoscopy without stylet, with seldom use of videolaryngoscopy.

Randomized Controlled TrialUsefulness of an automatic cuff pressure controller (SmartCuff) in inhibiting gasleakage around the cuff after tracheal intubation: a randomized controlled study.
Gas leakage around the cuff of a tracheal tube may frequently occur after tracheal intubation and inflation of the cuff. We assessed if the SmartCuff (Smiths Medical Japan, Tokyo, Japan), an automatic cuff pressure controller, would effectively prevent gas leakage. ⋯ Gas leakage may frequently occur after tracheal intubation, and the use of the SmartCuff can effectively maintain the sealing effect of the cuff.

Mental practice is an effective method for skill acquisition in medicine. We describe the integration of interview-derived sensory cues with a list of procedural steps into a cohesive script to facilitate mental practice for a High Acuity, Low-Occurrence procedure, the bougie-assisted cricothyrotomy. Data collection occurred through interviews with emergency physicians. ⋯ On average, each participant identified 13.7 cues per procedure. This represents the first attempt to combine cues identified by practitioners along with procedural steps with the aim of supporting rich mental representations of a procedure. We expect that this script will be useful to physicians seeking to improve their skills in this rare procedure.

The last 2 decades have brought important developments in anesthetic technology, including robotic anesthesia. Anesthesiologists titrate the administration of pharmacological agents to the patients' physiology and the needs of surgery, using a variety of sophisticated equipment (we use the term "pilots of the human biosphere"). In anesthesia, increased safety seems coupled with increased technology and innovation. This article gives an overview of the technological developments over the past decades, both in terms of pharmacological and mechanical robots, which have laid the groundwork for robotic anesthesia: target-controlled drug infusion systems, closed-loop administration of anesthesia and sedation, mechanical robots for intubation, and the latest development in the world of communication with the arrival of artificial intelligence (AI)-derived chatbots are presented.
