Multicenter StudyPredicting Psychological Distress after Pediatric Concussion.
A significant proportion of children and adolescents report psychological distress following concussion, but little is known about the predictors of these problems. The purpose of this study was to examine predictive factors of psychological distress following pediatric concussion. It was hypothesized that the presence of pre-injury psychological distress would be the strongest predictor of psychological distress post-concussion, with other demographic and acute injury factors adding incrementally to prediction. ⋯ A pre-injury diagnosis of anxiety and acutely forgetting recent information were significant predictors of psychological distress at 4 weeks, whereas worse acute orientation assessment in the ED predicted psychological distress at 12 weeks. Nearly one of four youth experienced psychological distress after concussion. Clinicians in acute care settings should screen for the factors (pre-injury anxiety, acute mental status) associated with post-injury psychological distress and consider proactively referring patients for further assistance.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyFunctional outcome after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury is superior in adolescents compared to adults.
Determining differences in neurological and functional outcome between adolescents and adults after acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Neurological outcome after traumatic cervical SCI is not superior in adolescents compared to adults in this cohort. Significantly higher SCIM scores indicate more functional gain for the adolescent patients after traumatic cervical SCI. Juvenile age appears to be an independent predictor for a better functional outcome.

Effect of a Low Free Sugar Diet vs Usual Diet on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Adolescent Boys: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
Pediatric guidelines for the management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) recommend a healthy diet as treatment. Reduction of sugary foods and beverages is a plausible but unproven treatment. ⋯ In this study of adolescent boys with NAFLD, 8 weeks of provision of a diet low in free sugar content compared with usual diet resulted in significant improvement in hepatic steatosis. However, these findings should be considered preliminary and further research is required to assess long-term and clinical outcomes.

Evaluating mental health service use during and after emergency department visits in a multisite cohort of Canadian children and youth.
The goal of this study was to examine the mental health needs of children and youth who present to the emergency department (ED) for mental health care and to describe the type of, and satisfaction with, follow-up mental health services accessed. ⋯ Children and youth and their families presenting to the ED with mental health needs had substantial clinical morbidity, were connected with services, were satisfied with their ED visit, and accessed follow-up care within 1-month with some variability.
