Mental Health Provision in PICU: An Analysis of Referrals to an Embedded Psychologist Over 20 Years at a Single Center.
The main aim of this study was to illustrate the type of mental health provision possible on PICU by describing the nature of referrals of child patients and their parents to an embedded psychologist over a 20-year period, adding to the literature on intervention and service development. ⋯ Growing appreciation of the psychological impact of a child's admission to PICU has been associated with increasing referral to an embedded psychologist over a 20-year period, at this center. Clinical and service implications are outlined in the context of the latest research on the mitigation of post-intensive care syndrome in this population.

Association of language concordance and restraint use in adults receiving mechanical ventilation.
Clinician-patient language concordance improves patient outcomes in non-intensive care unit (ICU) settings. We sought to assess the association of ICU nurse-patient language concordance with delirium-related outcomes. ⋯ We identified a twofold reduction in the odds of restraint use among mechanically ventilated patients for language concordant nurse-patient dyads. Ensuring nurse-patient language concordance may improve ICU delirium, agitation, and restraint use.

Patients experience long-lasting health problems defined as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) after Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. Little is known about PICS in primary care. ⋯ Patients admitted to the ICU encounter more new primary care disease-episodes and GP contacts. As patients present their symptoms to their GP first, it is therefore up to the GP to recognise these critical illness-related symptoms.

Prognosis of critically ill patients with extreme acidosis: A retrospective study.
This study aims to assess the impact of different subtypes of extreme acidosis on the mortality of critically ill patients. ⋯ Among critically ill patients with extreme acidosis, the primary disorder is not associated with mortality, but it is associated with the use of vasopressors and MV, the duration of MV, and the length of ICU and hospital stay. Additionally, hyperlactatemia is a predictor of poor prognosis in patients with extreme acidosis.

To determine whether serum lipoprotein is correlated with sepsis on the day of admission and help with early warning, identification, and intervention for sepsis. This retrospective study involved all children admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit from January 2021 to June 2023. Clinical data of involved patients were collected via inquiring databases of our hospital. ⋯ After adjusting for covariates, logistic regression analysis suggested that the CRP, PCT, HDL, Pediatric Risk of Mortality score, Pediatric Index of Mortality II score and LDL were independent risk factors for sepsis. Moreover, the AUC of CRP, PCT, HDL, and LDL were 0.58, 0.76, 0.82, and 0.86, respectively. Our results may indicate that serum lipoprotein is correlated with sepsis on the day of admission and may help with early warning, identification, and intervention for sepsis.
