Can the characteristics of emergency department attendances predict poor hospital outcomes in patients with sepsis?
The emergency department (ED) is often the initial site of identification of patients with sepsis. We aimed to determine the characteristics of ED attendances that predict poor hospital outcomes. ⋯ Mode of arrival and triage score, which are characteristics unique to the ED, may predict poor hospital outcomes in patients with sepsis.

Multicenter StudyThe GENESIS project (GENeralized Early Sepsis Intervention Strategies): a multicenter quality improvement collaborative.
Improved outcomes for severe sepsis and septic shock have been consistently observed with implementation of early best practice intervention strategies or the 6-hour resuscitation bundle (RB) in single-center studies. This multicenter study examines the in-hospital mortality effect of GENeralized Early Sepsis Intervention Strategies (GENESIS) when utilized in community and tertiary care settings. ⋯ Patients with severe sepsis and septic shock receiving the RB in community and tertiary hospitals experience similar and significant reductions in mortality and hospital length of stay. These findings remained consistent when examined in both before-and-after and concurrent analyses. Early sepsis intervention strategies are associated with 1 life being saved for every 7 treated.

Multicenter Study Observational Study[Serious sepsis treatment in intensive care departments in the Czech Republic - EPOSS Project pilot results].
Severe sepsis is still associated with significant morbidity and mortality, which is however different, as well as its management, depending on the region. What is the situation in the Czech Republic and what is the character of patients with severe sepsis is currently not known. The aim of the project is to describe the processes of care, outcome and characteristics of patients with severe sepsis admitted to the intensive care department of the Czech Republic. ⋯ Introducing the project, which in its first stage obtained valuable and internationally comparable data about patients with severe sepsis admitted to the involved ICU in the Czech Republic.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudySepsis patients do not differ in health-related quality of life compared with other ICU patients.
The aim of the present multicentre study is to assess health-related quality of life in patients with community-acquired sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock (CAS) 6 months after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU) and to compare the health-related quality of life of the ICU survivors with CAS with ICU survivors with other ICU diagnoses. ⋯ Patients admitted to ICU for CAS did not perceived different health-related quality of life compared with ICU patients admitted for other diagnoses.

Independent predictors of enteric fistula and abdominal sepsis after damage control laparotomy: results from the prospective AAST Open Abdomen registry.
Enterocutaneous fistula (ECF), enteroatmospheric fistula (EAF), and intra-abdominal sepsis/abscess (IAS) are major challenges for surgeons caring for patients undergoing damage control laparotomy after trauma. ⋯ Large bowel resection, large-volume fluid resuscitation, and an increasing number of abdominal reexplorations were statistically significant predictors of ECF, EAF, or IAS in patients with an open abdomen after damage control laparotomy.
