Chronic pain has widespread, detrimental effects on the human nervous system and its prevalence and burden increase with age. Machine learning techniques have been applied on brain images to produce statistical models of brain aging. Specifically, the Gaussian process regression is particularly effective at predicting chronological age from neuroimaging data which permits the calculation of a brain age gap estimate (brain-AGE). ⋯ As brain-AGE expression differs across distinct pain disorders with a pronounced sex effect for female subjects. Younger women with TN may therefore represent a vulnerable subpopulation requiring expedited chronic pain intervention. To this end, brain-AGE holds promise as an effective biomarker of pain treatment response.

The Parent Risk Screening Measure (PRISM) rapidly assesses parent distress, psychosocial function, and behaviors associated with child pain-related dysfunction in parents of youth with chronic pain. Recognizing the importance of parent pain-related cognitions and responses to pain during the acute pain period, the current study examined the utility of the PRISM in screening parents of youth with acute pain. ⋯ Findings suggest the PRISM is useful in screening for parent distress and behaviors associated with elevated pain symptomatology in a pediatric acute musculoskeletal pain sample. The important next steps are to identify the ideal time for administering the PRISM and to examine the associations among PRISM scores and pain outcomes over time.

Pain-related learning mechanisms likely play a key role in the development and maintenance of chronic pain. Previous smaller-scale studies have suggested impaired pain-related learning in patients with chronic pain, but results are mixed, and chronic back pain (CBP) particularly has been poorly studied. In a differential conditioning paradigm with painful heat as unconditioned stimuli, we examined pain-related acquisition and extinction learning in 62 patients with CBP and 61 pain-free healthy male and female volunteers using valence and contingency ratings and skin conductance responses. ⋯ State anxiety was linked to increased safety learning in healthy volunteers but enhanced threat learning in the patient group. Our findings corroborate previous evidence of altered pain-related threat and safety learning in patients with chronic pain. Longitudinal studies exploring pain-related learning in (sub)acute and chronic pain are needed to further unravel the role of aberrant pain-related learning in the development and maintenance of chronic pain.

Telehealth video visits are essential for delivering timely care while mitigating exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth video visits have the potential to improve missed appointments, reduce costs associated with Veterans Affairs (VA) travel reimbursement, and lead to positive patient and provider satisfaction. ⋯ The use of telehealth video visits during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced missed appointments, exhibited cost savings in VA travel reimbursement, and led to positive patient and provider satisfaction.

Endoscopic Options for Moderate COPD, Chronic Bronchitis, and Uncontrolled Asthma.
Until now, interventional therapies for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been available in the form of lung volume reduction procedures as end-stage options. Currently, the range of indications is expanding to include earlier stages of the diseases. Lung denervation is available for moderate COPD, and patients with chronic bronchitis are being evaluated for endoscopic goblet cell ablation. ⋯ In addition to thermoplasty as a long-proven procedure, new and currently under investigation is the targeted lung denervation. Most of these techniques are currently being tested in large pivotal trials and it will soon become clear in which phenotype which technique will be used in the different forms and stages of obstructive diseases. The current paper presents the techniques and the currently available literature.
