Multicenter StudyAir pollution and emergency department visits for cardiac and respiratory conditions: a multi-city time-series analysis.
Relatively few studies have been conducted of the association between air pollution and emergency department (ED) visits, and most of these have been based on a small number of visits, for a limited number of health conditions and pollutants, and only daily measures of exposure and response. ⋯ In this large multicenter analysis, daily average concentrations of CO and NO2 exhibited the most consistent associations with ED visits for cardiac conditions, while ozone exhibited the most consistent associations with visits for respiratory conditions. PM 10 and PM2.5 were strongly associated with asthma visits during the warm season.

Effect of audit and feedback on the availability, utilisation and quality of emergency obstetric care in three districts in Malawi.
Facility-based maternal death reviews and criterion-based clinical audit, were introduced in three districts in Malawi in 2006. ⋯ There is need to increase availability of emergency obstetric care by upgrading some health centres to EmOC level through training of staff and provision of equipment and supplies.

The Northern Ireland Public Access Defibrillation (NIPAD) study: effectiveness in urban and rural populations.
To assess the impact of mobile automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) in urban and rural populations. ⋯ Despite improvement in CRI there was no impact on survival (witnessed arrest 32.8%, VF 15.6%).

In Vietnam, injury is the leading cause of death in children under 18, and road traffic accidents are the fifth leading cause of death. Information systems for pre-hospital trauma care are insufficient. ⋯ The results reveal that injury is a major health problem in Hanoi and that the pre-hospital care system lacks both coordination and many vital components. Study results may assist decision-makers in identifying interventions to improve health and safety for the population of Hanoi.

Cardiocerebral resuscitation improves neurologically intact survival of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
In an effort to improve neurologically normal survival of victims of cardiac arrest, a new out-of-hospital protocol was implemented by the emergency medical system medical directors in 2 south-central rural Wisconsin counties. The project was undertaken because the existing guidelines for care of such patients, despite their international scope and periodic updates, had not substantially improved survival rates for such patients during nearly 4 decades. ⋯ In adult patients with a witnessed cardiac arrest and an initially shockable rhythm, implementation of an out-of-hospital treatment protocol based on the principles of cardiocerebral resuscitation was associated with a dramatic improvement in neurologically intact survival.
