Urinary Sodium-to-Potassium Ratio and Incident Chronic Kidney Disease: Results From the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study.
To evaluate the association of sodium-potassium intake balance on kidney function. ⋯ A low urinary Na/K ratio may relate with lower CKD development risk in adults with preserved kidney function.

Low skeletal mass predicts poor prognosis of elderly patients after emergency laparotomy: A single Asian institution experience.
Sarcopenia, defined as low skeletal muscle mass and poor muscle function, has been associated with worse postoperative recovery. This study aims to evaluate the significance of low muscle mass in the elderly who require emergency surgeries and the postoperative outcomes. ⋯ Patients with low muscle mass have significantly higher post-surgical complication rates and increased mortality.

Lumbopelvic Pain in Pregnancy in a Diverse Urban Patient Population: Prevalence and Risk Factors.
Objective: Pregnancy lumbopelvic pain (PLPP) is a common ailment during pregnancy with physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences. Prior literature has focused on majority Caucasian patient populations; none have focused on Hispanic populations, especially in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion of pregnant people who experience PLPP in mostly Hispanic population. ⋯ Conclusions: In a cohort of majority Hispanic people, we found that 63% of respondents had PLPP. Our study found that a higher PMI score and financial instability were factors influencing PLPP. Clinicians should be alert to pregnant people who express their difficulties with activities of daily living as they may be at risk of PLPP, and could benefit from further evaluation and treatment.

Increased expression of alpha-synuclein (ASYN) and decreased expression of Nurr1 are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. These two proteins interact functionally and ASYN overexpression suppresses Nurr1 levels. ASYN pan-neuronal overexpression coupled with Nurr1 hemizygosity followed by Nurr1 repression in aging mice results in the manifestation of a typical PD-related phenotype and pathology. ⋯ However, they displayed increased energy expenditure, reduced striatal dopamine (DA) and prolonged hyperactivity to a novel environment indicating impaired habituation. This DA-ergic dysfunction was observed in young adult '2-hit-DA' mice, persisted throughout life and it was associated with ASYN and Nurr1 synergistic alterations of DAT levels and function. Our experiments indicate that the expression levels of ASYN and Nurr1 are critical in the dysregulation of the nigrostriatal DA system and may be involved in neuropsychiatric aspects of PD.

This study was performed to test the clinical applicability of a new taste test, the Brief Self-Administered Waterless Empirical Taste Test (B-WETT) in the era of COVID-19. ⋯ This study shows that B-WETT is a valid and reliable taste test, and is convenient for use in the era of COVID-19 to evaluate the taste function of patients.
