To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) types in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia and the importance of hematological testing for CVD patients in the context of disease management. ⋯ ST-elevation myocardial infarction has a higher prevalence rate among CVD patients in the Asir region. Both coagulation and hematological indicators have high potential utility as CVD diagnostic and prognostic markers.

It has been generally recommended that platelet function may recover after the recommended 5-day discontinuation period prior to operation. The technique of thromboelastography has been demonstrated to monitor intraoperative platelet function in liver transplantation and coronary bypass surgery. However, there is a dearth of literature that addresses the utility of thromboelastography in aspirin-treated patients undergoing fusion. ⋯ TEG may be a helpful method to monitor perioperative platelet function in aspirin-treated patients undergoing fusion. It may be comparatively safe to relax the restriction of the aspirin-discontinued therapeutic window to approximately 2 to 3 days prior to surgery.

Patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) have an increased risk of bleeding and thrombotic complications. Prolonged conventional coagulation screening parameters, such as activated partial thromboplastin time or prothrombin time, are reported in less than 20% of CCHD patients. ⋯ In conclusion, our results provide new insights into the data on hypocoagulation with impaired clot lysis in adult CCHD patients as determined by ROTEM. Our findings may assist in determining the optimal management of patients with CCHD undergoing surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialHeparin/N-acetylcysteine: An adjuvant in the management of burn inhalation injury: A study of different doses.
Nebulized heparin may reduce fibrin cast formation and reduce the degree of airway obstruction in burn inhalation injury. ⋯ Nebulized heparin 10,000 IU decreased lung injury scores and duration of mechanical ventilation but had no effect on length of ICU stay and mortality. Moreover, nebulized heparin 10,000 IU was safe and had no effect on coagulation parameters.
