Effect of Postoperative Permissive Anemia and Cardiovascular Risk Status on Outcomes After Major General and Vascular Surgery Operative Interventions.
To determine the effect of postoperative permissive anemia and high cardiovascular risk on postoperative outcomes. ⋯ Postoperative anemia is strongly associated with postoperative ischemic events, 90-day mortality, and long-term mortality. Restrictive transfusion should be used cautiously after major general and vascular operations, particularly in patients at a high cardiovascular risk.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEffect of open-lung vs conventional perioperative ventilation strategies on postoperative pulmonary complications after on-pump cardiac surgery: the PROVECS randomized clinical trial.
To evaluate whether a perioperative open-lung ventilation strategy prevents postoperative pulmonary complications after elective on-pump cardiac surgery. ⋯ A perioperative open-lung ventilation including ventilation during CPB does not reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications as compared with usual care. This finding does not support the use of such a strategy in patients undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery.

Multicenter StudyRATeS (Re-Admissions in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery): a prospective regional service evaluation of complications and readmissions.
All the surgeries carry risks, which may lead to readmission at a later date. At present, there is limited Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) specific data in the literature. As a result, a prospective regional service evaluation aimed to discover the current complication and readmission rates across all T&O procedures and identify any factors associated with these outcomes. ⋯ This large, multi-centre project describes readmission rates following trauma and orthopaedic surgery. In the presented study, the elective nature of the procedure was associated with a reduced risk of readmission.

Clinical and radiological evaluation of cervical disc arthroplasty with 5-year follow-up: a prospective study of 384 patients.
Cervical total disc replacement was developed to avoid known complications of cervical fusion. The purpose of this paper was to provide 5-year follow-up results of an ongoing prospective study after implantation of cervical disc prosthesis. ⋯ In this study, favourable 5-year follow-up clinical and radiological outcomes were observed with a low rate of adjacent level surgery. Multicenter Study Comparative StudyIncidence and risk factors for important early morbidities associated with pediatric cardiac surgery in a UK population.
Given excellent 30-day survival for pediatric cardiac surgery, other outcome measures are important. We aimed to study important early postoperative morbidities selected by stakeholders following a rigorous and evidenced-based process, with a view to identifying potential risk factors. ⋯ Evaluation of postoperative morbidity provides important information over and above 30-day survival and should become a focus for audit and quality improvement. Our results have been used to initiate UK-based audit for 5 of these 9 morbidities, co-develop software for local monitoring of these morbidities, and parent information about these morbidities.
