From the time the medical school's acceptance letter is opened, students eagerly set off on the yellow brick road in pursuit of the attributes of the good physician: intelligence, compassion and courage. The students already possess these traits, just as the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion did before they set out for Oz, but they may dissolve in education systems that still decree that the initiation to medicine involve tonnes of tutored words and consuming call schedules.

[The concept of caring applied to nursing education--based on Milton Mayeroff's work].
This paper is intended to explore the way to apply the concept of caring in nursing education. In particular, the authors examined the concept based on Mayeroff's work. During the past two decades in the United States, the "Curriculum Revolution" shifted the paradigm from a content-driven curriculum to one that emphasized transaction and interaction with caring as a core concept. ⋯ She/He can believe that the student will develop her/his potential. If faculty effectively, organized the curriculum to offer the environment of interaction students could learn caring as a nurse through their daily activities. Also a teacher is able to play a role model for caring.

This article discusses creating a caring learning environment for undergraduate nursing students. The purpose is to apply the results of a research study in which students described their lived experience with caring in the nursing environment. Students (N = 23) shared caring and uncaring stories about their curricula. The study identified two patterns: "The Power of the Faculty" and "Creating a Caring Learning Environment." The authors discuss the implications of these patterns for developing caring faculty practices and a caring learning environment.
