To investigate the relationship between medical narrative ability and humanistic care ability among Chinese clinical nurses, examining the potential mediating role of empathy. ⋯ This study involves clinical nurses as participants and does not involve patients. This study collected data from clinical nurses using an online questionnaire platform in China. The questionnaire consisted of four sections, including demographic information and scales such as Narrative Competence Scale, Caring Ability Inventory and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional. Clear instructions were given to participants on how to complete each scale, and measures were taken to prevent missing or duplicate responses.

The patient's perception of physician empathy has a positive influence on patient behavior and treatment effects. The scale of Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) scale has been widely used to measure patients' perceptions of doctor empathy. However, the CARE scale lacks a standardized Mandarin version. In this study, we developed a Mandarin version of the CARE scale and validated its quality. ⋯ The scale could serve as an evaluation tool for patients' perceptions of doctors' empathy in primary-level medical service settings in Chinese mainland.

Empathy deficiencies are prevalent among deaf individuals. It has yet to be determined whether they exhibit deficiencies in both trait empathy and state empathy, along with the effect of top-down attention. ⋯ For state empathy, we found that deaf individuals showed stronger automatic emotional empathy responses and paid more cognitive evaluation resources. Moreover, the differential processing of empathy between deaf individuals and hearing individuals towards others' pain could be regulated by top-down attention, which occurs both in the early and late processing stages of pain empathy.
