Comparative StudyInfantile colic and the role of trait anxiety during pregnancy in relation to psychosocial and socioeconomic factors.
A study was undertaken to assess the impact of psychological, psychosocial and socioeconomic factors on the risk of having a child with infantile colic. ⋯ Psychological and psychosocial factors were found to be significantly related to an increased risk for infantile colic, and these factors interacted with age, parity, social support, and educational level in a complex manner. Even though no single most important psychosocial risk factor was identified, the findings lend support to the strategy of offering special attention in terms of information and support in the maternal healthcare system to very young women, women who do not cohabit with the father, and women with high trait anxiety.

To examine the ability of urologists to independently (with no radiology consultation) interpret non-contrast-enhanced spiral computed tomography (CT) in patients with acute renal colic. ⋯ Non-contrast spiral CT in patients with acute renal colic is an effective diagnostic tool which allows rapid and accurate evaluation of the urinary tract, thereby facilitating the acute management of patients with renal colic.

Chinese star anise (Illicium verum Hook f.) is a well-known spice used in many cultures. Many populations use it as a treatment for infant colic. Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum L), however, has been documented to have both neurologic and gastrointestinal toxicities. ⋯ In addition, we have found evidence that Chinese star anise has been contaminated with Japanese star anise. More strict federal regulation of the import of star anise into the United States is warranted. Star anise tea should no longer be administered to infants because of its potential danger in this population.

Our objective was to examine the effect of ambient temperature, age, and gender on the incidence of emergency department (ED) renal colic visits. We retrospectively analyzed a database of 15 New Jersey EDs from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 2002. We analyzed the number of renal colic visits as a fraction of total visits in monthly intervals. ⋯ Renal colic visits were 16% more likely in warmer than colder months (P<.001) and this effect was greatest in older patients and males. We conclude that higher ambient temperature, older age and male gender are associated with increased incidence of ED renal colic visits. Advice to patients, especially older males, to avoid dehydration particularly during hot weather may help prevent bouts of renal colic.
