The purpose of the study was to measure national prescribing patterns for hydrocodone/acetaminophen among veterans seeking emergency medical care, and to see if patterns have changed since this medication became a Schedule II controlled substance. ⋯ Hydrocodone/acetaminophen is the most frequently prescribed ED medication in the VA. The rate of prescribing has decreased since 2011, with the rate of decline remaining unchanged after it was classified as a Schedule II controlled substance. The proportion of prescriptions falling within designated guidelines has increased but is not at goal.

Metabolic acidosis and 5-oxoprolinuria induced by flucloxacillin and acetaminophen: a case report.
Frequent causes of high anion gap metabolic acidosis are well known: ethanol, methanol, and ethylene glycol intoxication; hyperglycemia; lactic or D-lactic acidosis; and impaired renal function. There are other causes, less frequent but also important. This report illustrates a rare case of a patient with increased anion gap metabolic acidosis due to a deficit of the γ-glutamyl cycle that led to 5-oxoproline (acid pyroglutamic) accumulation. ⋯ 5-Oxoprolinuria (pyroglutamic acid accumulation) is a rare, probably underdiagnosed cause of transient metabolic acidosis with increased anion gap.

Review Meta AnalysisParacetamol (acetaminophen) for acute treatment of episodic tension-type headache in adults.
Tension-type headache (TTH) affects about 1 person in 5 worldwide. It is divided into infrequent episodic TTH (fewer than one headache per month), frequent episodic TTH (two to 14 headaches per month), and chronic TTH (15 headache days a month or more). Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is one of a number of analgesics suggested for acute treatment of headaches in frequent episodic TTH. ⋯ Paracetamol 1000 mg provided a small benefit in terms of being pain free at two hours for people with frequent episodic TTH who have an acute headache of moderate or severe intensity.
