Both abdominal radiotherapy and a nuclear event can result in gastrointestinal symptoms, including acute radiation syndrome (GI-ARS). GI-ARS is characterized by compromised intestinal barrier integrity increasing the risk for infectious complications. Physiologically relevant animal models are crucial for elucidating host responses and therapeutic targets. ⋯ Moreover, decedents had increased Porphyromonas, Campylobacter, Bacteroides , Parvimonas , and decreased Fusobacterium and decreased Aerococcus, Lactobacillus, Prevotella, and Streptococcus. Our novel Sinclair minipig model showed dose-dependent clinical symptoms of GI-ARS. These findings provide invaluable insights into the intricate interplay between GI-ARS, intestinal inflammation, and gut microbiota alterations offering potential targets for therapeutic and diagnostic interventions after radiation exposure.

The variability in pain drawing styles and analysis methods has raised concerns about the reliability of pain drawings as a screening tool for nonpain symptoms. In this study, a data-driven approach to pain drawing analysis has been used to enhance the reliability. The aim was to identify distinct clusters of pain patterns by using latent class analysis (LCA) on 46 predefined anatomical areas of a freehand digital pain drawing. ⋯ Statistically significant differences were found between these clusters in every self-reported health domain. Similarly, for both LBP and MBPNP, pain drawings involving more extensive pain areas were associated with higher activity limitation, more intense pain, and more psychological distress. This study presents a versatile data-driven approach for analyzing pain drawings to assist in managing spinal pain.

Although there have been numerous advancements in burn wound management, burn injuries are still a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, and novel therapeutics are still needed to improve outcomes. Poloxamer 188 (P188) is a synthetic copolymer with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval that has many biological applications. This study aimed to review the literature on P188 in burn injuries and its effects based on burn mechanisms. ⋯ Although its utility may be limited in radiation injuries, P188 may be helpful in delaying the initial damage caused by radiation burns. P188 therefore has the potential to be used as a therapy in both burn wound management and in the treatment of systemic injuries sustained through burns. Future studies should aim to assess the efficacy of P188 in clinical models of burn injury.

The literature has revealed gaps in knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management among Ghanaian nurses and nursing students that can be attributed to inadequate education in the area. Consequently, nursing tutors teaching pain management might not have the appropriate knowledge to transfer to their students. ⋯ Educating nursing tutors about pediatric pain is imperative to enable students and thus future nurses to be equipped with the necessary evidence-based knowledge of how to manage pediatric pain.

Septic cardiomyopathy is a common complication in patients with sepsis, and is one of the indicators of poor prognosis. Its pathogenesis is complex, involving calcium ion imbalance in cardiomyocytes, nitric oxide (NO) synthesis disorder, mitochondrial abnormalities and immune inflammatory reaction, especially mitochondrial abnormalities. In this paper, the mechanism of mitochondrial abnormalities causing septic cardiomyopathy was discussed from the aspects of mitochondrial structure change, mitochondrial energy metabolism disorder, redox imbalance, mitochondrial calcium overload, mitochondrial biosynthesis and autophagy abnormalities.
