Approximately 10% to 20% of individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection may develop long-COVID syndrome, characterized by various physical and mental health issues, including pain. Previous studies suggested an association between small fibre neuropathy and pain in long-COVID cases. In this case-control study, our aim was to identify small fibre neuropathy in patients experiencing painful long-COVID syndrome. ⋯ This case-control study showed that approximately 50% of patients experiencing painful long-COVID syndrome had small fibre neuropathy. However, in our patient cohort, this specific post-COVID-19 complication was unrelated to demographic and COVID-19 clinical variables. Approximately half of our sample of patients with painful long-COVID symptoms met diagnostic criteria for small fibre neuropathy.

Sepsis, a complex and multifaceted condition, is a common occurrence with serious implications for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The YWHAH gene encodes the 14-3-3n protein, a member of the 14-3-3 protein family. While existing research primarily focuses on the role of 14-3-3n in conditions such as schizophrenia and various cancers, our study revealed that the expression of the YWHAH gene remained relatively stable in both infected individuals and healthy controls. ⋯ In a comprehensive analysis of public single-cell transcriptome databases, the expression of YWHAH was found to be distinctive in cases of sepsis and infection. These findings were corroborated through an in vitro analysis utilizing real-time polymerase chain reaction. This study represents the initial identification of variations in YWHAH gene expression between patients with infection and sepsis, potentially offering insights for the development of early detection and treatment strategies for sepsis.

Despite their asymptomatic occurrence, unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) account for a significant proportion of hospital charges and healthcare resource utilization in the United States. Hospital length of stay (LOS) is a reimbursement metric utilized to incentivize value-based care. Our study identifies predictors of extended LOS (eLOS) after elective treatment of UIAs. ⋯ Our study identified predictors of eLOS that could help promote risk stratification prior to treatment of UIAs. Future research that identifies predictors of long-term outcomes based on treatment modality could help identify ways to improve healthcare resource utilization in this cohort.

Thoracic vertebral fractures within homes are pivotal public health concerns due to their associated morbidity and significant healthcare expenditures. This study aims to dissect the intricate epidemiology of these injuries, integrating comprehensive risk factors beyond conventional demographics and location analyses. ⋯ By offering a comprehensive analysis that incorporates a wide array of risk factors, this study advances the understanding of thoracic vertebral fractures in residential environments. It underscores the necessity for targeted preventive measures that are cognizant of the multifactorial nature of these injuries, paving the way for improved safety interventions and public health policies.
