High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) is a potentially life-saving adjunct in the emergency management of the obstructed airway. HFNO has multiple beneficial applications in critical care and respiratory support, but its use in emergency-obstructed airway management has not been defined. ⋯ Oxygenation, carbon dioxide levels, and airway patency were maintained, which facilitated endotracheal intubation while the patient was spontaneously breathing during general anesthesia. The application of HFNO can be extended to emergency airway obstruction.

Quality of life in a randomized trial of early closure of temporary ileostomy after rectal resection for cancer (EASY trial).
A temporary ileostomy may reduce symptoms from anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer resection. Earlier results of the EASY trial showed that early closure of the temporary ileostomy was associated with significantly fewer postoperative complications. The aim of the present study was to compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) following early versus late closure of a temporary ileostomy. ⋯ Although the randomized study found that early closure of the temporary ileostomy was associated with significantly fewer complications, this clinical advantage had no effect on the patients' HRQOL. Laparoscopic Versus Open Resection for Colorectal Liver Metastases: The OSLO-COMET Randomized Controlled Trial.
To perform the first randomized controlled trial to compare laparoscopic and open liver resection. ⋯ In patients undergoing parenchyma-sparing liver resection for colorectal metastases, laparoscopic surgery was associated with significantly less postoperative complications compared to open surgery. Laparoscopic resection was cost-effective compared to open resection with a 67% probability. The rate of free resection margins was the same in both groups. Our results support the continued implementation of laparoscopic liver resection.

Correction to: Cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity during isoflurane-nitrous oxide anesthesia in patients with chronic renal failure.
In the original publication of the article, the first sentence was published incorrectly under the section "Patients and preoperative assessment". The correct sentence should read as, "The Yamaguchi University Graduate School of Medicine Ethics Committee for Human Study approved the study protocol (18th August 2004: H16-71)".
