Effects of Pulsed Versus Conventional Versus Combined Radiofrequency for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Prospective Study.
During radiofrequency bursts of energy are applied to nervous tissue. A critical appraisal of the benefits of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is needed, but is lacking. This study examined the associations between MIS and 30-day postoperative outcomes including complications graded according to the Clavien-Dindo classification, unplanned readmissions, hospital stay and mortality for five common surgical procedures. ⋯ MIS was associated with significantly fewer 30-day postoperative complications, unplanned readmissions and deaths, as well as shorter hospital stay, in patients undergoing colectomy, prostatectomy, hysterectomy or appendicectomy. No benefits were noted for inguinal hernia repair.

Short- and Long-Term Outcomes after a Reconstituting and Fenestrating Subtotal Cholecystectomy.
Multiple surgical techniques are recommended to perform cholecystectomy safely in difficult cases, such as conversion to open operation or subtotal cholecystectomy (STC). Reconstituting and fenestrating STC are 2 techniques for STC. The aim of this study was to investigate the short and long-term morbidity and quality of life associated with STC and to compare the outcomes after reconstituting and fenestrating STC. ⋯ Subtotal cholecystectomy is a safe and feasible technique for difficult cases for which conversion only will not solve the difficulty of an inflamed hepatocystic triangle. The choice for reconstituting or fenestrating STC depends on intraoperative conditions and both techniques are associated with specific complications.

An Anatomical Murine Model of Heterotopic Periorbital Subunit Transplantation.
Conventional reconstructive methods fail to achieve satisfactory results in total eyelid defect cases. Vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation might provide both good appearance and function for these patients. The structure of the eyelid is exceptional because it simultaneously consists of skin, connective tissue, the striated muscle, fiber structure, aponeuroses, and mucosa. Thus, before clinical application of eyelid allotransplantation, more experiments are needed to clarify the impact of ischemia, immunal suppressive agents, and deinnervation effects on these sophisticated structures. We developed an heterotopic periorbital transplantation model in rats to facilitate further experiment in this field. ⋯ Our study proved the anatomical feasibility of periorbital transplantation by establishing a heterotopic transplantation model, which might facilitate future eyelid allotransplantation-related experiments.
