Teaching Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation to Caregivers in the Emergency Department.
Infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been taught to caregivers of infants in inpatient settings. There are no studies to date that look at teaching infant CPR in the emergency department (ED). Using a framework of cognitive load theory, we compared teaching infant CPR to caregivers in a pediatric ED versus an inpatient setting. ⋯ Caregivers in the ED and inpatient settings after a self-instructional infant CPR kit did not demonstrate adequate infant CPR performance. However, both groups gained infant CPR knowledge. Differences in cognitive loads between the 2 settings were not significant.

Can a Dyadic Resiliency Program Improve Quality of Life in Cognitively Intact Dyads of Neuro-ICU Survivors and Informal Caregivers? Results from a Pilot RCT.
Neuro-ICU hospitalization for an acute neurological illness is often traumatic and associated with heightened emotional distress and reduced quality of life (QoL) for both survivors and their informal caregivers (i.e., family and friends providing unpaid care). In a pilot study, we previously showed that a dyadic (survivor and caregiver together) resiliency intervention (Recovering Together [RT]) was feasible and associated with sustained improvement in emotional distress when compared with an attention placebo educational control. Here we report on changes in secondary outcomes assessing QoL. ⋯ In this pilot study, we found improved QoL among survivors, but not in caregivers, who received RT and improvements sustained over time. These RT-related improvements were not significantly greater than those observed in the control. Results support a fully powered randomized controlled trial to allow for a definitive evaluation of RT-related effects among dyads of survivors of acute brain injury and their caregivers.

Impact of a Pediatric-Focused Communication Course on Patient/Caregiver-Perceived Physician Communication Skills in a Pediatric Emergency Department.
To evaluate the impact of a pediatric-focused, relationship-centered communication course on patient/caregiver assessment of emergency department (ED) physician communication skills. ⋯ An organization-wide, pediatric-focused, relationship-centered communication course improved patient/caregiver-perceived ED physician communication. Further research is necessary to assess long-term sustainability.

Programs and services available through the aging services network can help community-dwelling older adults to age in place but are often not discussed in routine primary care. The primary care liaison was developed as a novel integration intervention to address this disconnect. ⋯ The primary care liaison model is feasible, fosters ongoing interactions between primary care and Area Agencies on Aging, and connects older adults and their caregivers to relevant programs and services. Adoption of the primary care liaison model by other Area Agencies on Aging across the U.S. may help further the vision of optimized health and well-being of older adults.
