To describe critical tasks and errors associated with intercostal chest drain insertion, in order to develop enhanced procedural guidelines for task performance and training. ⋯ Tasks and sub-tasks associated with intercostal chest drain insertion was described and evaluated for criticality. The most critical task was the correct identification of a safe insertion point. Applications include development of procedural guidelines with tasks vulnerable to error highlighted and training interventions that promotes safe task performance.

Does Virtual Interviewing Provide the Information for a Satisfactory Rank Decision?: A Perspective From the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Interviews.
The primary aim of this study was to determine whether current fellows and program directors in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) were satisfied with virtual interviewing (VI) in terms of their respective matches. The secondary goal was to assess areas in which the virtual interview process could be improved. ⋯ Despite high satisfaction rates with the VI regarding matches and strong alignment of perception obtained via VI with in-person assessment during fellowship, both PDs and fellows continue to prefer a form of hybrid interviews. Our study provides valuable insights for guiding recommendations in future implementations of VI.

The opioid epidemic remains a major public health issue in the U. S., with over 100,000 overdose deaths in 2022, many linked to synthetic opioids. Emergency medicine plays a vital role in managing opioid overdoses, which typically cause CNS depression and respiratory failure. ⋯ Given the rise of opioid use, emergency physicians are likely to encounter more cases with similar presentations. MRI imaging should be considered in patients who do not recover as expected following an opioid overdose. Early identification of complications like CHANTER syndrome can lead to closer neurologic monitoring and neurosurgical intervention that may prevent decompensation or even death.

Female participants are underrepresented in randomised control trials conducted in urgent care settings. Although sex and gender are frequently reported within demographic data, it is less common for primary outcomes to be disaggregated by sex or gender. The aim of this review is to report sex and gender of participants in the primary papers published on research listed on the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Trauma and Emergency Care (TEC) portfolio and how these data are presented. ⋯ Fewer females than males were included in TEC trials from 2010 to 2023. One trial reported the primary outcome stratified by sex. There is significant scope to increase the scientific value of TEC trials to females by funders.
