Albuterol nebulized in heliox in the initial ED treatment of pediatric asthma: a blinded, randomized controlled trial.
A prospective blinded, randomized controlled trial was undertaken to compare the initial response of albuterol nebulized in heliox or control in the treatment of moderately severe asthma in children presenting to a pediatric ED. ⋯ Our results demonstrate that albuterol nebulized with heliox offered no clinical benefit over standard therapy in the initial treatment of moderately severe asthma in the ED.

The role of patient-controlled apparatus for sedation in the emergency department.
Hand trauma is a fairly common cause of emergency unit admissions. Various analgesic and sedative agents are used to decrease pain and anxiety during minor surgical procedures for hand trauma patients and provide more comfortable conditions for the surgeon. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of patient-controlled sedation (PCS) during surgical procedures done under local anesthesia for hand trauma in the emergency department. ⋯ The two regimens did not differ with respect to hemodynamic changes, sedation levels and patient satisfaction. Therefore, PCS may be an acceptable alternative for surgical procedures performed using local anesthesia.

[Telephone triage performed by emergency room physicians].
To determine the applicability and utility of a telephone triage performed by physicians in a pediatric emergency department (PED). ⋯ If special training programs and answering systems are established after a training period, telephone consultation in a PED is a safe and useful method of performing patient triage. Satisfaction among families was high.

Intensive intervention improves primary care follow-up for uninsured emergency department patients.
To test an intervention designed to improve primary care use and decrease emergency department (ED) utilization for uninsured patients using the ED. ⋯ This project has demonstrated that it is possible to improve primary care follow-up for uninsured ED patients.
